It's back-to-school time so I want to share a little of my experience with being a Black admin in a school with 48% white students. This is specifically for parents of Black children so you know what happens in schools & are able to disrupt this issue with "discipline". #thread
I walked into a team teacher meeting (they're all white) who was to be doing curriculum planning. Instead, they switched it up and decided to call kids out of class to talk to them about their "behavior". I'll keep putting that in quotes since it was a nefarious act.
The Ts are on one side of the table and a Black student, we'll call him X, was on the other. He was slumped over, picking at his fingers. Walking in and seeing this I asked, "What's this?" They told me they were trying to talk to him about what he does in class. It smelled fishy.
Teachers - the evidence points to us doing things radically different next school year. Some of y'all are prepping already but if you're still in the "I'm paralyzed" camp but want to contribute to some incredibly important changes this country needs then here's a little thread.
FIRST, go sign up for all the social media you can get from @ZinnEdProject. You'll get daily On This Day material but you'll also get teaching materials, the ability to search by time period or theme, and you can also donate. DON'T forget to donate. zinnedproject.org
You can start with this one: zinnedproject.org/2016/06/civil-… because the protests students are currently seeing are not unlike those in the 60s. This may mean you'll have to do something you don't like. You MIGHT have to cut down on that favorite unit of yours that you've spent years on.
Normally I see things like this and my only reaction is OMG IN 2018? (or fill in the year because I have been disgusted for several of them) but I'm going to break this one down.
First, I hope Malik and his family sound all the alarms over this because it's too rampant.

Ok, so it looks like this assignment is on repeat. You can see where the teacher wrote in the "8" for 2018 so they've used this before. The fact that this is EXTRA credit is incredibly problematic because it's white kids who might do this. Black students may feel anger & refuse.
Right off the bat, we're giving white students an advantage here by offering extra credit that doesn't harm them so they'll think, "Why not?"
There aren't really directions. Just a numbered list. No objectives are stated here. No purpose for the assignment. This=poor teaching.
Pssst, hey students? Come here for a second. I want to share a secret with you. (THREAD) Houston-area school district threatens to suspend students who protest after Florida shooting houstonchronicle.com/news/education… via @HoustonChron
Sometimes, the adults in your schools flat out lie to you. Other times, they just get things wrong. Either way, I want to be straight with you on some things about education, especially of the public sort. When you hear "A disruption of the school will not be tolerated" be wary.
Y'all have disruptions daily. It's okay when the ADULTS do it. They'll pull you out of class to narc on your friends and get information out of you. Sometimes, they'll stop the learning because they bring in a special speaker. Those aren't always good.
