A few thoughts on this whole #KevinSpacey episode and how glad I am that #Netflix has severed ties with him.
Sure, it may be good business sense over social responsibility that drive them to it , but that's exactly what's important here.
When people call for the boycott of celebrities like Allen, Polanski, Salman Khan, etc. some people think it's important to separate
the art from the artist. But I don't think that's it. Their art, and our fandom of it gave them the power they then exploited.
Either in the way of affording the best legal counsel so as to face leniency from the judiciary, or in the way of
the culture of celebrity deification, that affords them fans who will defend them, no matter what.
Sure, you not watching a Woody Allen film won't affect him much in of itself, but a vocal movement of people doing the same
will make him bad for business to the people who fund his art.
This is a heinous criminal, not some dude that got caught smoking pot.
Are we just going to say, "cool, you fucked up. Now keep doing your thing and take my money and adulation."
When we don't hold celebrities
to the same standards as everyone else, we feed a culture that tells people that
it's okay to not respect others, as long as everyone thinks you're better than them due to your unquestionable privilege.
Are Allen and Spacey geniuses? Yes. But are they criminals? Also yes.
If being a genius is a get out of jail free card, then why is the Unabomber facing life?
It's important to take a stand, and be vocal about it, no matter how inconvenient or trivial it may seem.
So while we cannot put a hard stop to celebrities from being exploitative predators, we can discourage it by taking away their invincibility
and restoring the agency of those who question it.
