2,300 year history of #Paithan and the iconic #Paithani Sari - from Satavahana era, Roman trade, Peshwas, to present
#Paithan was the capital of the Satavahana Dynasty, and had extensive trade with various other regions, including the Roman Empire. 2/n
#Paithan silk weaves were extremely popular among the Romans - this led to good trade via the sea route (Kalyan) and the old silk route. 3/n
Roman coins, artifacts have been found around #Paithan .. Paithan era Indian statues have been found in Pompei...points to the relations 4/n
The #Paithan silk continued to thrive for many centuries, through some ups and downs across the Rashtrakuta and other dynasties. 5/n
#Paithan silk weaving reached a peak during the Yadava Empire in 12th century... there capital was nearby at Devgiri (Daulatabad). 6/n
#Paithan suffered a setback after Khilji invasion and the defeat of Yadavas....but there was some revival and Persian design influence. 7/n
Another big revival happened during the 18th cent Peshwa era. The Peshwa Ladies were big fans of 'Paithani' silk and Paithan prospered . 8/n
After a sluggish demand over the past two centuries, local and global market has again picked up over the past 3-4 decades. #Paithan 9/n
#Paithan Saris or 'Paithanis' are hand woven and can take months to weave. The originals can cost from Rs 30,000 to a few Lakhs. 10/n

Today is 158th birth anniv of Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande.
He wrote the first modern treatise on Hindustani classical music.

Bhatkhande traveled throughout India, meeting with ustads and pandits, and researching music, and studying ancient texts.

Today is the 181st birth anniversary of Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar. He was a was a noted Indian scholar, orientalist, and social reformer.

The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune was started under his leadership, by his students in 1917.

#Bhandarkar studied at Elphinstone College in Bombay. Along with Mahadev Govind Ranade, Bhandarkar was part of the first graduate batch in 1862 from Bombay University. He obtained his Master’s degree the following year, and was awarded a PhD from University of Göttingen in 1885.
#Bhandarkar taught at Elphinstone College, Mumbai and Deccan College, Pune during his distinguished teaching career. He was involved in research and writing throughout his life. He retired in 1894 as the Vice Chancellor of Bombay University.
