2/ American adventurer & author Ernest Hemingway takes the pulse of one of his Maasai staff in February, 1954. 
3/ While on safari in Kenya, the Pulitzer award writer and one time WW2 journalist used to conduct regular clinics for his gun bearers and porters. 
4/ That pic was taken weeks after he and his wife had survived a plane crash while on safari in #Kenya.
5/ Hemingway emerged from the crash to find that the world media had already declared him dead. Indeed, he had the rather bizarre - while still in Kenya - opportunity to read his own obituary.
6/ Hemingway, who so popularised the word 'safari' in the west that it was incorporated as an English word, wrote about his flirt with a young Kamba girl during his second Kenyan odyssey (1953-1954). The book was titled 'Truth At First Light' and was published posthumously by... 
7/ ...his son Patrick Hemingway in 1999.
8/ What was also true is that Ernest drank too much during his last safari to Kenya. In his sunset years back in his native Idaho (U.S.) home, he battled deteriorating mental and physical health.
9/ On the morning of 2nd July, 1961, Hemingway was found dead of a shotgun wound in the head at his home. His wife said that he had shot himself accidentally while cleaning his weapon. But many of Hemingway's friends believed he killed himself.
