Today @IndianMedAssn has called for a nationwide 12 hr strike to protest against National Medical Council Bill to be introduced in Parliament today.
What are these objections? How can they seriously hurt you as a patient? Please go through this thread -
2. Some good stuff - Old Medical Council of India will be shut down and 4 new bodies will replace it. This will bring in more specific expertise and faster decision making.
3. All four bodies will have few doctors and remaining all members (overwhelming majority) to be nominated by central government. States have little or no say
4. Private medical colleges get a free hand to add seats. 40% of which will be charged at will. Creating a clear income based divide that is worse than present situation.
5. As government nominated members will be in charge, serving ONLY government agenda, corruption and sycophancy will be rampant. Government's faith in Bureaucrats to sort everything out is misplaced in highly specialized fields like healthcare
6. AYUSH practitioners will be allowed to practice modern medicine with "bridge course". This ignores fundamental differences in science, training & practice. Will you allow a commercial vehicle driver to fly a plane after a short"bridge course" bause they are both just vehicles?
7. Exit exam is a good point to ensure good quality of training. But, government's expertise in conducting exams is fraught with mostly misses.
8. As a patient you WILL get affected -
a. by getting moneybags as your pvt college, special quota doctors
b. untrained AYUSH doctors legally practicing modern medicine
c. rampant corruption at all levels of medical education and license.
d. political agenda driven healthcare.
9. All suggestions sent to NMC drafting committee are probably lying in the bin somewhere. Government has pushed ahead its original draft without any significant changes to avoid this weaknesses.
10. To support good, affordable and science informed modern healthcare please write to @PMOIndia NOW to stop tabling this flawed bill and revise it with stakeholders that includes YOU. Please RT. Save Modern Medicine #JaiHind

A thread on suicide prevention. I will try to give simple tips to help you prevent suicide without feeling overwhelmed. Everyone can help.
1. All of us feel suicidal at times. Nobody is immune. If you haven't felt it so far, give life a chance.
2. As of now, we don't know precisely what causes final act of suicide. People reach that point through various pathways.

Today I was invited to give a talk to first year medical students of Bharati Vidyapeeth New Medical College, Pune.
I am alumnus of this college (1990 batch).
Some points covered in the talk-
1. Comradarie, friendship and a sense of community is valuable. Make friends,
Nourish friendships, help each other. As doctors except your colleagues nobody will understand your difficulties. Provide that support.
2. Lady doctors have even more difficult job in our patriachic society. It is fine to be a good doc. You don't even need to take ALL roles
Pushed on you by society. Support each other as fellow lady doctors. Friends who give active help are gold dust. Let's do that for each other.
3. Learn to speak simple language . This is valued by patients and their families. Best way to achieve this is by teaching each other

I am a private practitioner working in India. Doctors like me provide 70-85% healthcare in India.
Most of us have a flat consulting fees. Frequently we give concessions or wave off fees for patients in need.
I have always wondered if there can be sliding scale of charges.
Most patients who need concession never ask for it.
High fees puts entry barrier for service access.
Wealthy/well to do actually pay less as fees are normally decided by middle class paying capacity.
I toyed (in my mind) with many systems but couldn't find a simple but effective one.

What do you think of following idea -

I see kids up to 18 years of age.
Should I develop a sliding scale of consulting fees according to their school fees?

1. Schools and parents communicate at increasing frequency, intensity and number of issues.
I believe this is harming both and kids.
2. Parents don't need to know everything that happens in school unless it crosses certain threshold that is decided by school.
3. Creating WhatsApp groups of parents is like planting a nuclear device on short fuse.
I can't see a single sensible use of such groups.
