The Times sent a Pulitzer-winning political photographer to shoot the #GoldenGlobes red carpet, and the results are really something: nytimes.com/slideshow/2018…
And this one:
And these:
Damon Winter won a Pulitzer for his Obama 2008 campaign photos, which are amazing, and was a finalist for a series of photographs of survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic missionaries in remote Alaskan villages: pulitzer.org/winners/damon-…
I looked at a contrasting set of standard red carpet photos (the ones I usually click through with great enjoyment) and...there's really a difference. people.com/style/golden-g…
Curious if other news outlets will take a similar approach in the photographers they assign to cover the Oscars & other red carpet events this year.
This one, from earlier tonight, is one of the most powerful:

How the South African farmers "white genocide" conspiracy spread in the US:
April 2017: Common talking point among American white nationalists
July 2017: Conspiracy aired on Grant Grant Stinchfield's NRA TV show, with a parallel to Black Lives Matter: mediamatters.org/video/2017/07/…
Here's how an NRA TV guest described the violence against South African farmers conspiracy last summer, suggesting that the same thing could happen in the United States if the "racial hatred that is being forced on the American culture by the Black Lives Matter crowd" continues.
August 2017: Simon Roche, of South Africa's Suidlanders, describes attending neo-Nazi "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville
March 18, 2018: Australian minister considers fast-tracking visas for white South Africans, following News Corp columns: theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Chatted with @brianstelter about covering racists:

-Every time a white supremacist agrees to talk, they're trying to weaponize your media platform for recruitment

-If you print a white supremacist talking point in your newspaper, it doesn't refute or fact-check itself
More quick thoughts on the debate over how to cover white supremacists here: mailchi.mp/cnn/rs-august-…

And for the in-depth version of this conversation, featuring some of the best journalists who cover white supremacists, check out our @OntheMedia episode: wnycstudios.org/story/on-the-m…
Let me emphasize that second point: white supremacist ideas are not obviously wrong or transparently ridiculous.

Two Fox News commentators, Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham, have been echoing white nationalist rhetoric on their shows. Rep. Steve King has done this repeatedly.

1) Gov. Rauner starts a budget standoff in 2015 that leads to dramatic cuts in social services/mental health

2) Illinois freezes funding for Ceasefire violence interrupters.

3) Chicago shootings & homicides spike

4) Rauner decries the "unacceptable" "chaos" of protests
1) Thanks to Rauner's budget standoff with state legislators, community mental health programs are shuttered, and hundreds of social service staffers laid off. theguardian.com/us-news/2016/m…
1b) St. Sabina--whose Father Pfleger led the highway shutdown protest--lost state funding in 2015. Their summer jobs program which offered 1,150 jobs in 2014 could offer only 350 in 2015. Summer jobs programs have been proven to reduce youth violence.

The @GuardianUS decided to dedicate a reporter to the gun beat in early 2016, so lots of thoughts about this @secupp @brianstelter conversation:
Agree with @secupp on this: When we talk about why conservative Americans distrust the media--why our credibility is so damaged--gun reporting is a crucial part of that story.
Was talking to a gun owner in Louisiana a few months ago about this, and he said: when newspapers report on a car crash, they don't just get the make of the car wrong, or include basic errors about cars and how they work.

For 20 years, Illinois Republicans have feared this neo-Nazi would become the Republican nominee in a heavily Democratic Congressional district in Chicago. This year, looks like he's done it: chicago.suntimes.com/news/holocaust…
In 1998, a Chicago Republican warned that if Jones became the Republican nominee, it would be "a national embarrassment." articles.chicagotribune.com/1998-02-27/new…
And don’t miss the gerrymandering angle on this story: the neo-Nazi apparently benefitting from partisan redistricting

Two crucial things about this gun violence investigation: 1) it focuses on smaller cities with an outsized burden: usatoday.com/story/news/201…
2) This investigation holds city leaders accountable for the failure to follow through on steps to prevent violence: usatoday.com/story/news/201…
Too much gun violence media coverage ignores past political choices, and treats community violence like a constant state of being.
