Today’s Black History thread is dedicated to racism in swimming. #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryMonth

It’s was reported that an entire swimming pool was drained because Dorothy Dandridge took a swim in it.
The New Frontier hotel in Vegas also drained an entire swimming pool because Sammy Davis Jr took a swim.

When pools were integrated, an incident occurred where a manager poured acid in the water while black kids were still swimming in it
After integration of swimming pools, white folks did two things. #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryMonth

1. They cemented over 2000 city pools across the country, preventing black kids from learning how to swim.

2. They built country clubs so their children could swim without blacks.
Black folks not knowing how to swim is by design. The amount of places we could learn to swim were taken away from us.

Black children continue to drown at almost 14 times the rate of white children.

Recently black folk medaled in the Olympics in swimming. Simone Manuel and Cullen Jones carry that torch in ensuring our community learns how to swim. They serve as visibility and representation needed to fight the history of racism in swimming

Tariq Nasheed doesn’t want liberation, he wants the power to oppress like a white man

You can’t be pro-Black and attack Black women regularly

You can’t be pro-Black and patriarchal

You can’t be pro-Black & anti-queer

His hatred of some Black folks is a tool of white supremacy
Black women and Black queer people square up daily against anti-Blackness.

He feels that any checking of cishet Black men is anti-Black which is dangerous and part of that “protect the image” at all cost logic.

Naw. Especially when our lives are on the line.
We can fight white supremacy AND make it known that Black women are dying at the hands of Black men

That Black queer people aren’t being supported, acknowledged and affirmed enough by Black cishets

That’s how this works. If you ain’t worried about trans deaths, you ain’t for us

Drapetomania: “Runaway Slave Syndrome”
American physician Dr. Samuel Cartwright observed black slaves who fled from captivity and saw an illness. He named the illness, “Drapetomania or the disease causing Negroes to flee” #BlackHistoryMonth
To cure Drapetomania, recommended “whipping the devil out of them” until slaves became submissive again. “Submissive” was the primary state to which he felt they belonged. Another remedy suggested by Cartwright was having the big toe from both feet severed. #BlackHistoryMonth

Many of us who are LGBTQ go through a second adolescence because our first (5-18 yo) is about suppressing identity.

So when we do get into our 20's we make A LOT of mistakes that most attribute to younger people because we never got to be younger people in our true identity.
Suffice to say, If you are LGBTQ don't be so hard on yourself if your life doesn't mirror the heterosexual timeline of love, marriage, career, and kids because many of your years were stolen from you. So take time to live them.
