THREAD-It took me a few days to reflect on what I think of the zero draft of #globalcompactmigration; having been so close to the process and substance for the last few months, my first thought is that there is a lot to take in! And that's good: we need ambition (1) #formigration

And that was not a given;many commentators say that they are 'surprised not to be disappointed'-as they usually are.Stakes are high too,with US withdrawal, Hungary on the verge and may European states concerned that #UNSG report unbalanced #formigration #globalcompactmigration(2)

There is a lot to like in 22 (!) objectives:concrete proposals on labour and skills,like #Globaskillspartnership promoted by @m_clem and on access to #socialprotection & portability of #socialsecurity;on vulnerability and missing migrants #formigration #globalcompactmigration (3)

Language in opening vision especially important: '#migration can be source of prosperity, innovation and sustainable development connecting societies within and across all regions, making us all countries of origin,transit and destination'#formigration #globacompactmigration (4)

BUT - it falls short of saying that that #migration is a form of #development, that migrants don't move because of poor development, but because they have development opportunities and aspirations. Not just a matter of root causes! #formigration #globalcompactmigration (5)

What matters now is (i) that political process of negotiations will be as open and engaged as the consultation thus far and (ii) that the need and advantage of international cooperation will prevail and coalitions for action will emerge #formigration #globalcompactmigration (6)
