On #POC lawyering: A law school friend asked me why I was so white because I like opera &c. This is one form of POC exclusion (thread) 1/
ppl think #LatinxLandia is all cervezas tacos and burros and women in rainha da batería costumes. That happens-Not exclusively2/
now it's a platitude that cultures are multifaceted. The issue is who fits where, and stereotypes matter here. 3/
it's not about being offended, but the time a colleague shove a packet of tortilla chips in my face was pretty awful. 4/
I'm more concerned about inclusion - I'd like some of the pie too. Here's where opera comes in. 5/
My parents were very class conscious in how they raised my brother and I in a typical LatAm way. We're not old money. 6/
we're middle class. But there was a lot of room to regress, 1st gen college parents knew. So since I was little, we 6/
were exposed to things associated w upper class trappings. I have only as an adult realized how my mom went out of her way to 7/
put art, music, and other things assoc'd w upper class in our faces. Opera, inter alia. I love opera and classical music. 8/
however #POC are not always felt to belong in those places in white majority regions, as shown in comment heading this thread 8/
why does it matter? #POC lose access to opportunities that way. If by definition #POC don't have access to all spaces, they 9/
are not privy to all networking opportunities, not seen fitting for all tasks or all situations. Eg in. #RHOOC has an example 9/
where they are arranging catering. High end Mexican cuisine still not seen high-end enough. The celebration of #POC 10/
"earthiness" keeps us naturally down and humble of $$. That's why hipster culture os white supremacist. 11/
does this make a difference? Yes. I know my upbringing helps me relate to ppl who can determine my fate and has already to my12/
benefit. This is what makes good old boys clubs go around. But I know my #POC presentation still limits access /end

ps: Obvs we #POC must improve too. Memory: Chicana colleague joking "I'm Mexican, of course I'm familiar with livestock" I'm not
totes ok for her and her family to be. But not helpful to perpetuate stereotypes,or for me to deny full breadth of Mx experience
[context: Rainha da batería refers to the dancer in a samba escola that typically wears the very skimpy costume typically referred to as a "samba costume". I'm just being a pedant as carnaval costumes can include this ogimg.infoglobo.com.br/rio/21014885-4… and this i.pinimg.com/originals/aa/1… ]
This thread has a bunch of typos. did it on my phone and more corrections will be obnoxious. apologies.
*1st gen college graduate parents
*'round.
