I totally get that a thousand things are happening and it feels like there's a crisis happening every minute in the Trump era.
But PLEASE don't sleep on what's happening in the Senate right now to fight the #TrumpThreatLevel. It affects us all.
In short: Trump is overseeing an illegal war in Yemen. Congress has never authorized it. It's causing the world's worst humanitarian crisis - people are starving and being slaughtered. And the U.S. is complicit.
A procedure under the War Powers Resolution allows Congress to step in when a President wages unauthorized military force, and force a vote to stop it.
Congress almost never uses it. But they're using it now.
It's the #SandersLeeYemen joint resolution - a bipartisan bill from @SenSanders and @SenMikeLee (yes you read that correctly) to stop Trump's illegal war in Yemen.
This is important for a few reasons.
One, U.S. participation in the Yemen civil war should not be happening, period. It's destroying the country and not achieving anything pertaining to our national security. In fact, it places us on the SAME SIDE of the conflict as al-Qaeda and has helped terror groups to flourish.
Two, AGAIN - Congress has NEVER authorized this. Congress and not the POTUS have the constitutional power to authorize military force. This is happening completely outside our democratic checks and balances.
THIRD, this is a test case for Congress. Are they willing to stand up to the #TrumpThreatLevel? If he tries to strike North Korea, will they step in? What they do on this resolution will tell us all we need to know about how much "resistance" is real and how much is lip service.
The Senate HAS to vote on the #SandersLeeYemen resolution after 10 days. We have 10 days to get Congress to stop Trump's illegal war in Yemen. It only needs a simple majority in the Senate (NO 60 vote threshold).
Meaning, this could pass.
Really, a handful of Democrats will probably decide how this goes. It's a bipartisan resolution and only a few votes will swing it.
hello I am processing my outrage at @SenateDems over their failure to vote together and #BlockHaspel and I think I'm going to tweet one fact from the torture report for every Democrat who comes out in support of Haspel is anyone with me on this
OK, here we go.
A favored tactic of the CIA was to tell detainees they would kill their children or rape their mothers in front of them. (pp.4, 70, 487) This happened in the site Haspel oversaw.
Yet another Monday in the Trump era - lots of nonsense floating around.
Nunes' fake #ReleaseTheMemo non-scandal is up there for Most Ridiculous Thing We Have to Pay Attention To Today.
In case you're wondering what "the memo" is, here's a quick recap.
It's not a memo. It's a 4-page document created by Nunes and company, based on classified documents pertaining to the Trump/Russia investigation.
We're essentially talking about a short Word doc on which Nunes wrote his preferred talking points framing it all as a witch hunt.
Reporting indicates that the classified docs that Nunes based his "memo" on reveal a fuller picture of the evidence leading current and former FBI/DOJ to gather intelligence on Carter Page, suspecting him to be an agent of a foreign power.
