I really hope that every White Jewish person who has been critical of #WomensMarch has done a full accounting for their own personal participation in White supremacy
I also don’t think it’s too much to ask that, while they’re at it, they do a more careful examination of their own religious community’s participation in White supremacy and racism
… maybe both domestically … and globally ...
It doesn’t mean you have to be defined by the worst behaviors of the religious community you’re participating in. But maybe do a deeper look at racism within the Jewish community
I mean, I live in Crown Heights. My grandmother grew up in Brownsville. Trust me. Jews have a very problematic history with racism.
It’s not all holding hands as partners in the great Civil Rights struggle. That part is great. But it’s WAY more complicated than that!
I try to never stop learning on this topic. I always learn things I didn’t know about about the Ocean Hill-Brownsville teachers strike
I always learn new things about Crown Heights.
In the 1990s.
And the Chabad-Lubavitch community’s role in inflaming tensions.
These are not comfortable topics. But we have to examine old wounds if we are going to heal.
I’m back to report that there’s a lively discussion about this over at my Fb. I’m trying to moderate. But I’m sure someone’s feelings are going to get hurt. My money is on one of my Jewish family members.
Like we’re talking about that Cherry Hill rabbi that *whispers* hired a hit man to murder his wife.
Like, this dude was the most infamous Jewish religious leader in south jersey when I was a kid. Even before he had his wife literally murdered en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Neul…
If you’re ever wondering if I have a complicated relationship to my religious identity, that story explains a source of my own pain.
Updated: the cousin whose reaction I was most interested in came through in a really constructive way!
Still waiting for the wrath from this one friend of my dad’s.
Also, if you’re Jewish, you can have these kinds of conversations with your family and not be totally ostracized. I promise.
It’s hilarious to me that there are so many right-wing Jewish people on here, doing the bidding of white nationalist reddit trolls. Congrats guys, you’ve made your bubbies proud.
And by hilarious, I obviously mean fucking stupid and dangerous.
“Teaming up with literal nazis, to own the liberal cucks on twitter” is not ... smart or edgy. It’s just embarrassing.
