Tweeting this morning from the @GlobalCCS annual #CCS policy forum. The focus this morning is “what’s next” for carbon capture technology and policy.
.@GlobalCCS_Brad mentions a glowing statement released yesterday by @IEA praising Congress' recent extension and reform of 45Q tax credit for #CCS: bit.ly/2GoeCUR
“That’s one of the rare times I’ve seen them put something out that enthusiastic about a policy measure taken by any country in the world,” @GlobalCCS_Brad says of @IEA’s comments on 45Q.
.@citizensclimate Daniel Richter says to get more environmental groups on board with #CCS, it’s important to “remove the fear” and get them to “engage with the solution base.”
.@ClearPathFound’s @powellrich says technical challenges for #CCS do remain, but says building out “low-hanging fruit” projects in the industrial space can help “scale up” the technology.
Most challenging #CCS tech? Retrofits of existing coal and natural gas plants. “That will take a bit. The incentives are not quite there without a few other incentives to backstop and fill the gap,” @powellrich says.
Former @ENERGY fossil energy secretary David Mohler says 45Q momentum gives an opportunity to build a “sustainable community” behind #CCS, similar to the community of interest behind renewables.
.@cleanaircatf’s Kurt Waltzer is now previewing a new report, due out next week, looking at how 45Q will impact potential power sector #CCS projects.
What @cleanaircatf found:
• With 45Q only, by 2030, 13 projects projected. Mostly coal plant retrofits and paired with enhanced oil recovery
• Adding other financial incentives, that jumps to 88 projects, with significant growth in #CCS on gas plants
Worth noting: Walker Dimmig, whose company is behind the NetPower #CCS project, says there are still some uncertainties about how 45Q will be implemented that need to be resolved.
.@AndrewSteerWRI says the @IPCC_CH report on a 1.5-degree world due out this year will help #CCS. “We’re going to discover in spades that there is no other alternative but to invest more in CCS.”
