#IfSocialMediaDisappeared then people could stop pretending like prior to social media everyone were “public conversationalists” dying for conversation with “everyone” on earth at all times because that never fucking happened prior to social media. The myth could finally die.
It’s simply that some people never had to respect a “no” (e.g. someone deciding not to engage; muting; blocking) prior to social media, and they still don’t offline. Still. They get angry about being blocked because they feel entitled to engagement 24/7.
🗣🎙
1) People ignored each other long before smartphones, if they wanted to ignore each other. 2) Smartphones are used for communication; it happening online doesn’t automatically make it invalid. 3) People can be superficial/lack intimacy *in person* as well.
Some ppl engage *more* online b/c 1) some physical safety even if other abuse is major factor 2) hard to connect to marginalized folks offline depending on where they live 3) introversion, exhaustion, disabilities etc 4) they’d ignore some folks otherwise (e.g. 3rd cousins on FB)
Watch *who* complains the most about “the art of public conversation” as lost, like I mentioned in the thread I linked. You’ll find an over abundance of 1) privileged and/or don’t respect “no” 2) some extroversion 3) misunderstanding of social media as multi-faceted.
Crying over “conversation lost” while ignoring that some ppl can only speak to folks who care about them online. Not in unsafe home. Not in unsafe community. Not at a bad job.

Also some use social media as a tool for work. FOR WORK. For info. For news. Share/study. Get over it.

Nothing irritates me more than people who compare small amounts of disposable income on small pleasures or necessities to actual wealth and capital. It’s so ugly and classist not to mention utterly ridiculous.
Ol “if you didn’t buy sunglasses then you could be a homeowner” ass bitches. Shut the fuck up you bloody airhead. LOL.
“I don’t see [insert White CEO with White and male privilege, generational wealth, access to venture capital, tutors their whole life, access to elite higher ed even if they leave early] wearing Jordans so clearly their unethically made loafers 5X the cost are okay” ass hoes.

Many White liberals love or are White supremacists. They’ll claim it’s about freeze peach and duh bait but that’s because they’re bitchmade and can’t admit they simply like* that ideology. Even Bannon straight up admits what he’s about. The White liberal can’t even do that.
And ones who don’t like it think it’s a game w/o consequences b/c they do not care what happens to PoC, don’t study history to see repeating patterns & think “owning” or “winning a debate” against a supremacist is the “goal,” versus actual survival, decolonization, liberation.
Oh & White supremacists aren’t debating. They’re “increasing their territory.” And White liberals facilitate it. It’s not about “debate” for White supremacists. They simply need as many mics in as many ways possible, whatsoever. That is what the history that so many ignore shows.

Asking tons of questions about the hurricane and expecting people in the target zone to assuage your external fears...isn't helpful to us.
It's truly exhausting dealing with the mechanics of other people's "compassion," when it's simply time + emotional labor for me.
I wish people knew how to express care without a barrage of inexperienced unsolicited advice + endless curiosity questions to be answered.
