I have lived with somebody with body dysphoria. My wife is a recovered anorexic. Between starvation and death by suicide anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental health illness.
I have seen the pain and anguish caused by her hating her own body. The denial of their physical self and the attempts to further self harm through continued eating restriction.
I have seen her just a small step from taking her own life. Weeks and months of suicidal ideation. The persistent thought that not only would she be better off dead but also I would be better off with her dead. The wish to have never even existed.
The despair and anguish she felt was real. The hatred of her own body was real. My fear for her was real as was my commitment to do whatever it would take to just keep her alive even for just one more day. Not a plea for recovery, just a little more life, a little more time.
We were both exhausted by the daily fight and pain.
Had any doctor affirmed her body delusion yet alone suggested giving her liposuction, or a gastric band or pills to reduce her appetite they would have rightly had their practice licence immediately revoked.
What my wife needed was time and therapy. I needed support to understand her condition and what I could and couldn’t do to help her.
Over time things have improved - I lied earlier, she is not recovered, she is in remission. It is a fight we struggle with on a daily basis but one step, one day at a time the recovery happens.
Of course parents of children suffering from a gender dysphoria need professional support.
Of course those children need all the professional care and support.
What they don’t need is charlatans pushing chemical castration and using the threat of suicide to bully these parents into submission.
