A quick story:

I saw the older sister of one of my former, Mexican students. Upon greeting her, I spoke in Spanish (and my Spanish was terrible). She said, “I speak English.” I then felt SO dumb, and racist. I apologized, yet still, the damage was done — I made a huge mistake.
I thought I was being culturally competent and loving by speaking to her in her “native tongue,” but in reality, I was only stroking my ego and patting myself on the back for “going the extra mile.” It was selfishness masquerading as service.
A few takeaways:

1. #RelationshipsMatter. My student helped me w/ my Spanish because her and I had built that relationship. W/o this piece between the sister and I, I was offensive.

2. Even people of color get it wrong sometimes. We ALL need to be learning how to love better.

4. Locate “leaders” then lead them.
5. Be okay with crazy, (sometimes).
#RelationshipsMatter

If you’re able to reach your students and prove that you respect who they are, this generally will translate into them respecting how you run your classroom. They’ll want to do right by you, because they know you care for them.
Practice Procedures Persistently

You must practice your classroom procedures nonstop at the start of the year, & also, randomly throughout. Expectations must be made clear, leaving no room for, “I didn’t know.” Practice until you hear groans & complaints, then, practice again!
