Happy #InternationalBeerDay! Here's a quick thread on notable beers in animation! Here's Misato downing a Yebisu in Evangelion! This shot really conveys the joy of downing a cold one and the end of a long day!

Yebisu (#ヱビス) is a real beer and actually one of the oldest brands in Japan. In fact it's so old that the first letter in it's name (ヱ) is no longer in use in modern written Japanese!

When Evangelion first aired the TV network did not want to give free endorsement to Yebisu, so the brand was actually changed to "Yebichu" as a reference to Oruchuban Ebichu, a hilarious adult oriented comic about a hamster which Gainax would adapt into a TV show years later!

While working on Evangelion, Misato's legendary voice actor Kotono Mitsuishi (also the voice of Sailor Moon!) would read Ebichu and howl with laughter. She showed the rest of the staff the comic and they thought it would make a great show. Years later she ended up playing Ebichu!

Next up, here's a clip from a 1997 short film called Murphy's Irish Stout: Last Orders which is essentially a (TOTALLY RAD) Irish beer commercial animated by all stars from Production IG, fresh off of the success of Ghost in the Shell!

Of course if we are to discuss animation and beer on this #InternationalBeerDay we gotta talk about the AMAZING "Pink Elephants on Parade" scene from Disney's 1941 classic, Dumbo!
#WesternAnimation #Sakuga

The scene starts off innocently. Dumbo is nervous and has hiccups so his buddy Timothy Q Mouse tells him to drink some water, not knowing it's a barrel of beer! Looks fun right kids?

NOPE NOPE NOPE. The scene quickly progresses into an expressionistic nightmare featuring some of the most surreal, frightening and downright beautiful animation the world had yet to see in 1941!

So much amazing experimental stuff in here! Decades ahead of it's time! The Pink Elephants on Parade sequence from Dumbo is one of the most iconic portrayals of inebriation in film!

Last, but not least, I present to you Suntory's groundbreaking beer commercials from the early 80s, starring whistful, lovelorn, melancholic cartoon penguins.

No I'm not crying! That's just my supraorbital gland acting up!
