I mean if The Oscars are gonna jump the shark and start giving out a consolation prize that is the equivalent of that wack ass “Urban Pop” category from The Grammys, y’all might as well go all in 🤷🏾‍♀️

Still. Despite how tickled I am by this ploy to get people to watch a cermony that is historically about stroking the egos & kissing arses of the #FFFFFF crowd, I abhor this new category because it means the Acacemy is implicitly saying that popular movies cannot also be good.

It also doesn’t address the institutional-wide problem that ceremonies like The Oscars and The Golden Globes and etc have with genre films that mop the floor with their auTEUR faves commercially and critically.

So excuse me if I don’t take kindly to your Runner’s Up Oscar™️ LOL

I also think it’s suspect as HELL that it is well-documented that Disney is finna launch a wall-to-wall Oscar’s campaign for #BlackPanther and then y’all suddenly wanna add a “Popular Movie” category.

Mad suspect.

But nothing surprises me when this is the same biz that thought that Get Out was a “comedy”, that Logan was only good enough for an Adapted Screenplay nod, & didn’t think to nominate Thor: Ragnarok for any special effects awards even though it pioneered new filming techniques.

I’m just tired of niggas moving the goalposts. Truly.
