Suhrawardy Govt denied the charges of forceful conversions. As the news of riot spread Sarwar sent information to the him that Goondas from outside had come & started the riot.

The AIML denied the riots & refused the help of Armed forces.
Swami Trambakananda who witnessed the riot, sent news to Calcutta about the ferocity and inhuman atrocities on Hindus.

Ashoka Gupta rescued many abducted women. Leela Roy rescued about 1300+ abducted women. Many women social workers came to relief work, Sucheta Kripalini was among them.

Hindu leaders from Noakhali & nearby areas sent telegrams describing the riot to SP Mukherjee, Sarat Bose & asked for help on 14th & 15th. they kept pushing the Govt to take actions.

Dr. S.P. Mukherjee & other Hindu Mahasabha leaders sent relief work by trains to Noakhali, Tipperah, Faridganj etc. Many prominent freedom fighters & social workers joined in the relief work.

Gandhiji sent 4 Hindu girls to Sujata Devi, daughter-in-law of Chittaranjan Das for rehabilitation.
It was not enough. The Bengal Govt’s apathy to provide relief and rescue people was prominent.

Bengal Governor, Burrows was holidaying in Darjeeling at that time, he never responded. Patel wanted to visit Noakhali but he was denied entry by Bengal govt.

The Bengal Govt kept the news of the riot suppressed for 5 days, just like they did on Direct Action Day. On 16th, Suhrawardy accepted there was lawlessness in Noakhali, Tipperah & nearby areas.

MKG came on barefoot & set up his base in a half-burnt house in Srirampur village, where he stayed until 1 January. In the next 7 weeks he covered 116 miles and visited 47 villages.

Mistrust between Hindus & Muslims continued to exist & stray incidents of violence occurred even during his stay in Noakhali. his stay in Noakhali was resented by the Muslim leadership.

The resentment against Gandhi's stay in Noakhali grew day by day. Towards the end of February 1947 it became vulgar. Gandhi's route was deliberately dirtied everyday and Muslims began to boycott his meetings.
