1/ Here's a bunch of animated time lapses from active volcanoes around the world.
#VolcanoesFromSpace
Data is from #ESA #Sentinel2 satellites. It's processed with the #Copernicus / @sentinel_hub tools.
You ask why? Because I like looking at images from volcanoes and so do you!
2/ Bogoslof Island is the summit of a submarine stratovolcano in the Bering sea. In 2017 it erupted and the island became MUCH bigger. There's going to be some happy puffin and seals there (the ones that didn't burn in lava flows that is)!
#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
3/ Manaro Voui is a shield volcano in Vanuatu. Starting in 2017 and still going today it's continuously erupting. People are evacuated.
Chief Tari One of Ambanga has conducted ceremonial offerings but it seems these have not been accepted.
#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
4/ Krakatau in the Indonesian Sunda Straits is my favourite volcano. Everyone should read the book by @simonwwriter; Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded.
#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
5/ Most people have never heard of the Erta Ale shield vulcano in #Ethiopia.
It's a continuously active basaltic shield volcano and unfortunately can only be visited with an armed military escort. It's located in the badlands though..
#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
6/ Who can forget the amazing Mount #Vesuvius! Well, as the satellite footage was not that impressive (if only #ESA had been around in 79 CE.).. me.
Here's Mount Stromboli though, also in Italy and cool as well. Look at the little village!!
#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
7/ I only learned about the Fuego stratovolcano (in Guatemala) today. It's pretty big.
According to Wikipedia it has erupted frequently since the Spanish conquest. I genuinely wonder what the Spanish did to cause that.
I love the clouds.
#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
8/ Sakurajima ("Cherry blossom Island") is an active composite volcano in Japan. The 1914 eruption inspired a really bad movie (The Wrath of the Gods).
People in the know think a major eruption can take place within 25 years.
#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
9/ Mount Erebus is the best stratovolcano on #Antarctica. It's always eruption trying to do its part in keeping the penguins and polarbears (climate change, things go weird) at bay.
It reminds me of looking at the moon with a telescope :)
#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
10/ Here's Mount Etna. I know, yet another Italian volcano.. But just like the #Italian food there's something heart-warming about their volcanoes.
#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
11/ And lest not forget a good old American volcano, It's Mount St. Helens.
Let's hope she doesn't get angry the next.. well.. 500 years or so.
#Volcano #VolcanoesFromSpace #sentinel2 #Sentinel
12/ Here's a less well known one. Barron Island is part of the Andaman Islands and the only known active volcano in South-East Asia.
There's no "significant vegetation" yet somehow it has a small population of goats. Seriously.
#Volcano #VolcanoesFromSpace #sentinel2 #Sentinel
13/ And for now I'm going to end with a lovely #Spanish volcano named Teide that is trying to spread love on #Tenerife by making heart shaped snow patterns.
Hope you enjoyed this as much as I did!

It's pretty darn amazing how today we access to all of this information. Some of the data I used was only taken two days ago by an @ESA satellite.
In combination with easy-access tools #OpenData is something truly wonderful & empowering.
Merci @ @CopernicusEU @sentinel_hub
3/-a Here's another time-lapse of #Ambae Island showing the erupting Mararo Voui volcano at a larger scale. For the people living there (most are evacuated now) it must be a totally frightening amount of ash.
