Only a few more moments until GovLab’s Co-Founder and Chief Research and Development Officer Stefaan Verhulst participates on the #IODC18 panel “Open Data and the Private Sector: Breaking Down Walls.”
Key points before we begin:
- Priv. actors can be data users, intermediaries, or providers
- Incubators and accelerators help hundreds of companies
- Large and small bus use open data for business operations and for products and services
- Open data is a largely untapped resource
Stefaan highlights GovLab’s work on datacollaboratives.org, an initiative that shows how partnerships with the private sector can generate insights that lead to public good. Check out the website for more information.

If you want to make code/data “available”, GitHub isn’t enough.

You must deposit at a DOI-issuing data repository @figshare & @ZENODO_org are both free & awesome; can be synced w/ a GitHub repo

Why GitHub not enough? 1/4
#OpenAccess #OpenData
GitHub is a place for things to be worked on, not for them to live forever.

- Links are fragile (username, repo name)
- Users can delete repos
- GitHub could make your code/data unavailable in the future.

DOI-issuing data repositories preserve your stuff for the future 2/4
Depositing on @KaggleDatasets isn’t good enough for #OpenAccess #OpenData either.

- No API for accessing files without an account
- Fragile URLs
- Kaggle Datasets is a commercial thing.

Do all three! GitHub repo, Kaggle Dataset and @figshare or @ZENODO_ORG 3/4

Link: journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…
En su día, esta investigación también apareció en los medios. Os dejo el link por si lo queréis leer: elcorreo.com/bizkaia/socied…
Esta pieza se la debemos a @lagamez

It's art up for review in opinions, of course I'm going to gravitate towards something shared with interest, when he didn't say a word for 2 days! Why was he there? #opendata #smartcities #bigdata #ai
I went through every single video he released in hip hop to understand him not saying a word. Easy to work out, he's a very bitter man who has absorbed all his parents immigrant opinions at home #opendata #smartcities #bigdata #ai
His parents are not middle class anywhere & neither is he #opendata #smartcities #bigdata #ai

This article is well-intentioned. But let’s not bullshit about the impact #opendata will have on buses when more fundamental issues are unresolved. wired.co.uk/article/bus-ti…
I mean, come on. A better and more modern bus system? That’s just hyperbole.
I can’t help but compare to the Finnish, here.

Finns: We’ll help you out, but you have 2 years to get your shit together.
UK: We’ll help you out after you have told us to sod off for years. So here is 7 years to sort it.

A short thread from me about #opendata and transport.
1/ Ask Google Maps for public transport directions in Lille, and it'll probably tell you to walk. It might offer some out-of-date timetables for local trains. But it doesn't know about the trams, the metro, or local buses.
2/ Pop over to Rennes (consistently France's best city at #opendata) and you'll get metro and bus and train times and usually the (very simple) fare.
3/ Jump back to Lille and now use Here maps, and you'll get the full set of travel options.

It's #YorkshireDay! Yes it is. What better way to celebrate than a MASSIVE thread that I'm calling the 'Entirely-anecdotal-Kane-Fulton-#Yorkshire-Startup-Tech-Power-List-100!' These talented folk have been a joy to work with and are doing awesome things in our county. Let's go!

So it’s a Saturday afternoon, it’s 20+ degrees outside – you know what you should do?

That’s right, read a thread about GOVERNMENT ORGANOGRAMS, a year on from our @instituteforgov #IfGhackday #opendata
Organograms aren’t most obvious data thing to get pulses racing. Hardly AI, blockchain (#buzzword), Citymapper etc.

Part of Cameron’s May 2010 pledges (bit.ly/2LXhdqE) to open up data, they include names, salaries, professions, jobs of civil servants & units w/in depts
Maude called them ‘the most comprehensive organisation charts of the UK civil service ever released online’ bit.ly/2uVd28k. Not the flashiest or sexiest datasets, but mgmt info vital both for effectiveness (understanding your workforce) and accountability.

I used @ProjectJupyter to investigate @NSERC_CRSNG expenditure over recent years using #opendata from @OpenGovCan. My exploration is freely available via @mybinderteam here: mybinder.org/v2/gh/colliand… 1/
According to the @OpenGovCan data, Discovery programs @NSERC_CRSNG increased in budget by 16% between 2013 and 2016. 2/
#NSERC leadership was notified of significant gaps in funding for #math and #stats #research by the math/stats Liaison Committee, by Institute Directors, and (publicly) by @NGhoussoub in May. nghoussoub.com/2018/05/09/fet… 3/

Anyone interested in mapping the linguistic diversity of Indian states with the help of this data?

Maybe, we can compare that with economic indicators and see if there is any correlation between diversity and development.

Today, @NITIAayog released a Discussion Paper titled ‘National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence”. #AIforAll
niti.gov.in/writereaddata/…
We provide our initial thoughts on the paper here. 1/n
We welcome this initiative by @NITIAayog, but a call for comments would have been a welcome addition. The paper takes important steps forward from the #AI Task Force report released earlier this year by the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (dipp.nic.in/sites/default/…). 2/n
This paper attempts a more holistic look at a broader range of issues concerning AI including #regulation, #ethics, #fairness, #transparency and #accountability. However, a number of issues still remain with this paper. 3/n

Now that the lawyers have run their marathon and we wait for the top court to rule, a small personal diary note thread on #Aadhaar & me.

Huge thanks to community of people who have widened my wisdom of how society works. Fellow helpless people helping each other.
It started sometime in 2011, when I knew nothing, enrolled along with family. But our enrollment packets were lost, EID wasnt even searchable. I did write some emails to support, but yielded nothing more than, please enroll again. As the need wasn't real, did not enroll.
Parents gave up at a later date, enrolled, got UID successfully generated. I resisted, mostly because of laziness, but did not have developed trust enough to enroll. On random browsing sessions, have heard Usha Ramanathan on YouTube, but never took deep dive into issues.

1/ Here's a bunch of animated time lapses from active volcanoes around the world.

#VolcanoesFromSpace

Data is from #ESA #Sentinel2 satellites. It's processed with the #Copernicus / @sentinel_hub tools.

You ask why? Because I like looking at images from volcanoes and so do you!
2/ Bogoslof Island is the summit of a submarine stratovolcano in the Bering sea. In 2017 it erupted and the island became MUCH bigger. There's going to be some happy puffin and seals there (the ones that didn't burn in lava flows that is)!

#VolcanoesFromSpace #Sentinel2
3/ Manaro Voui is a shield volcano in Vanuatu. Starting in 2017 and still going today it's continuously erupting. People are evacuated.

Chief Tari One of Ambanga has conducted ceremonial offerings but it seems these have not been accepted.
