#G7 trade discussion yesterday. I understand that Trump presented a list of grievances, listing what each country, one by one, owed the US - trade deficits, tariffs, defence and so on. Basically, a live performance of his Twitter threads.
Trump was especially "strong" towards Trudeau, ranting about agriculture, and Merkel. He reportedly said NAFTA was the second worst deal ever, WTO was the worst, and that US/he paid to defend other countries, they don't pay to defend themselves.
Macron hit back hard, imparting on "an economic lesson" to the US president, a source said, over how free trade works and why Trump's tariffs don't.
I understand that at one point, Trump suggested the creation a tariff-free zone among G7 members. 'you up for that?' According to the source, other leaders were later unclear whether this was a provocation or an actual proposal on the table.
The source described Trump as a "whirlpool", "out of control".
Earlier, during a meeting between the European G7 leaders, Italy's PM clarified his tweet about Russia rejoining G7/8 saying he meant *after* Russia meets its Minsk obligations (i.e. progress on Ukraine).
fwiw as a side note, I am told PM Conte made a good first impression on other European leaders.
I also understand that during the #G7 leaders’ discussion on trade Trump told Trudeau that it’s useless to make tearjerking speeches about Canadian soldiers helping US fight together in the war if he then puts very high tariffs on dairy products

Using Tactics Perfected By Trump, Populist And Nationalist Leaders Are Undermining Italy’s Institutions buzzfeednews.com/article/albert…
Italy’s budget incident isn’t isolated. It sits within a crescendo of verbal attacks carried out by both the Five Star Movement and the League against officials, institutions, the media, anything and anyone perceived to stand in their way. Social media is their weapon of choice
Words are now seeping into actions, which could steadily erode the country’s democratic & cultural institutions – and cause lasting damage in a country where checks & balances, civil society, and the media are weak and less adept at holding the powerful to account

Salzburg. A short thread:

1) Nothing that Tusk said on Chequers, that Macron said about some Brexiteers (while stressing he respected the choice of British voters), and that Merkel said about the single market and four freedoms, is anything they hadn’t said before.
2) Surprise today is in many ways due to misreading the past few weeks and months. Misplaced optimism and reports stemming from who knows where, ignoring reality, confusing details that evolve all the time with substance and principles that have remained intact since day one.
3) May’s Chequers or nothing approach has frustrated many. It is not viewed as strength, but worrying weakness: not having the strength to do what’s needed to get an agreement, and push it over the line back home.

Brexit section of Tusk letter to EU leaders ahead of Salzburg meeting: "we should reconfirm the need for a legally operational backstop on Ireland"
While the EU has been working to dedramatise the backstop, its main principle - a legally operational backstop that can be used if and until there is no other solution - remains intact, and is very unlikely to change
Over the past 7 months, the UK has basically not engaged on the backstop. Theories as to why, are most welcome. Let the EU do all the work, and accept the backstop on transfer deadline day? Hope the 27 blink? Last minute UK proposal? Something else?

For me, the most interesting line in Barnier's FAZ article isn't the rejection of Chequers (we knew that) but: "We don't need more time. What we need are political decisions”. So let's have a look at the state of the UK's political decision making:
First up, this marvellous tweet, and the debate on geographical indications (GI). France sells China about 220 million litres of wine a year. Britain sells China less wine than Georgia (fabulous wine btw) and Moldova.
These are the stats for sparkling wine. Also, China recognises the GI Champagne (champagne.fr/en/press-media…) so "excellent English sparkling Champagne" wouldn't really work as a name. In terms of feta, worth keeping in mind that both geography and recipe are central to the debate

The Papadopoulos sentencing memo is a fascinating read documentcloud.org/documents/4776… It appears to describe Mifsud as a Russian intermediary. This par is particularly interesting:
Here are Mifsud’s movements since from @buzzfeednews reporting:

Weeks later, he was in Moscow, according to a visa dated 24 March 2017

After that, in early April 2017 he flew to Kiev, from London, to visit his fiancee. On 12 April he flew back to London buzzfeednews.com/article/albert…
WhatsApp messages sent by Mifsud to his Ukrainian fiancee place him in Saudi Arabia in May 2017, at the same time as President Trump’s visit, and in Taormina, Sicily, during the G7 Summit

The M5S-led decision to revoke Autostrade’s concession agreement before an inquiry or trial is interesting, and rather revealing of the party's DNA:

1) From a comms perspective, it makes it hard for opposition parties to criticise without getting accused of siding with the firm
2) But, legally, it’s a curious decision.

3) From a practical point of view, it seems to have been done without a clear alternative plan in place.

In short, it’s the kind of thing the M5S would call for in opposition
All this goes to the heart of the M5S conundrum in government:

1) M5S built much of its success over the years on the back of movements against pretty much everything: no-vaccines, no infrastructure projects, no trade deals etc. M5S organised "f**koff days" to protest everything
