So, @AjitPaiFCC was all over TV today smugly celebrating the repeal of #NetNeutrality. But the reality is that he's going to lose. The battle for the free and open Internet rages on. #SaveNetNeutrality
#NetNeutrality is NOT "dead." Yes, the FCC's disastrous and unpopular repeal officially went into effect today, but it's not going to last. We're fighting in the courts, in Congress, and at the state and local level. And we will win. #SaveNetNeutrality
Don't panic! The Internet isn’t going to come to a crashing halt. You won't be cut off from your friends. But starting today, your Internet provider is legally allowed to mess with you in a bunch of new ways, and it's only a matter of time before they do. #SaveNetNeutrality
Without #NetNeutrality, cable and phone companies like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T have the power to arbitrarily censor entire categories of websites, apps, or online services, or charge expensive new fees to access certain types of online content. #SaveNetNeutrality
That's how they'll manipulate you. Imagine if your ISP let you visit Fox News and CNN for free, but charged $10 for a package that includes NPR and the NY Times. Without #NetNeutrality THEY control where you get your news, how you stream music, everything. #SaveNetNeutrality
They won't start right away, because they know Congress and the courts are watching them. But over time they'll start testing the waters. The Internet that we know and love will slowly cease to exist. #SaveNetNeutrality
But we're not going to let that happen. Congress can still reject @AjitPaiFCC's blatant government handout to his former employer, Verizon. They can reverse the FCC decision and restore #NetNeutrality using a resolution under the Congressional Review Act (CRA). #SaveNetNeutrality
.@AjitPaiFCC was not elected by the public. And he certainly made it clear he wasn't interested in listening to us, given that poll after poll shows the overwhelming majority of voters -- regardless of whether they're Republicans, Democrats, or Independents -- oppose his repeal.
But our members of Congress are ELECTED OFFICIALS. They work for us. #NetNeutrality is not a partisan issue. No one wants to be screwed over or charged more money for less Internet. This is exactly what the Congressional Review Act was made for. #SaveNetNeutrality
The Senate already voted in a historic bipartisan upset-to block the FCC repeal & reinstate #NetNeutrality. Now we need to do the same in the House of Representatives, where we need a simple majority (218 reps) to sign a "discharge petition" to force a floor vote.
Our best chance to pressure Congress is between now and the midterms. We'll need to pound the pavement district by district to get the votes we need. We'll need small businesses to mobilize (businessesfornetneutrality.com) and EVERYONE to call their reps: (battleforthenet.com)
My thoughts on this sad day for America (a thread):
Right-wing & corporate special interests selected this nominee and propped up his nomination with tens of millions of dollars in dark money.
We need to prioritize protecting our courts, which starts with retaking the Senate.
They picked Kavanaugh because they know he is a reliable vote; he is a lifelong foot soldier for these interests, a political operative who became one of the most partisan ideological judges in the country.
That they supported Kavanaugh despite his obvious and disqualifying flaws - temperament, dishonesty, rabid partisanship, credible accusations of sexual assault - speaks to how beholden they are to these special interest powers, and how critical the Court is in their plan.
Even as hundreds of separated children remain terrified & alone in detention, the Trump Administration is moving to try & replace family separation with indefinite family incarceration in an unacceptable bid to jail children indefinitely and subject them to more trauma and abuse.
To move this plan forward, the Trump Administration is trying to strip away existing safeguards and protections for children through a new regulation to allow for the long-term imprisonment of children in facilities with well-documented abusive conditions.
The number one priority of the Flores Settlement Agreement is that children not be incarcerated. This foundational principle, which the government agreed to in the settlement, recognizes that the best way to ensure a child’s wellbeing is to keep them out of jail.
America! Take note! What happened today was an act of patriotism by Senator Booker for the people. But maybe it’s what happened next was most outstanding—the entire @SenateDems in the judiciary committee stood with Booker and therefore stood with the American people. 1/5
The @GOP wants you to believe that they are the party for the people. The way they want you to believe this is by just repeating the words over and over. Words are just words. What actionable items have the Republicans done for the American people? 2/5
Weren’t we taught actions speak louder than words? Think about which party fights for your right to healthcare and equality — which party fights for your right to live out the American Dream by giving those willing to work hard for it, every possibility to achieve it. 3/5
