THREAD:
Today was hard. The past week has been hard. The past few months have been hard. The constant barrage has made me sad, angry, & scared for our country. The past 18 months have been frustrating & disheartening. But I'm also finding hope, & you can too. Here's how.
1/
A) I've been deciding on some concrete actions I can take to effect change, like:
- Working to promote voter registration among the students at the med school where I'm on faculty & among the residents I work with
- Writing even more #PostcardsToVoters (through @DemocratWit)
2/
- Finding ways to volunteer with the @azdemparty &/or for @RepSinema's campaign for Senate that fit into my busy schedule (I'm sure it's possible! Somehow?)
- Donating to @kyrstensinema's campaign for Senate, & to @emilyslist, @swingleft, & @RAICESTEXAS
- Phone banking
3/
- Calling (again) & writing (again) to my Senators (and rinse & repeat). @JeffFlake & @SenJohnMcCain, you'll be hearing a lot from me (again).
- Starting an advocacy-focused elective for interested med students
- Knocking doors (!?!)
- Marching (#FamiliesBelongTogther)
4/
A) [continued]
I'm sure there's other actions to take, but to be effective & still keep my job as a busy mom & MD, I need to be realistic. @physicianwomen, what other practical actions have you found feasible with your schedules?

And back to how to find hope, more broadly:
5/
B) I'm going to keep reminding myself this is a marathon, not a sprint. And like @JasonKander said, I need to be both patient & impatient at the same time. Have a feeling I'm going to need to re-read this thread from him a lot over the next 6 months.

6/
And that means I need to pace myself, but also (and maybe more importantly), take care of myself in addition to all of the above. And also look for inspiration in the great leaders who have done this before:

7/
And find inspiration in the newly emerging leaders of today, like @Ocasio2018

8/
And find inspiration in those who had the privilege of working with @BarackObama & share their insights/wisdom with us. (Thank you @danpfeiffer, @brhodes, @jonfavs, @jonlovett, @TVietor08, & @AlyssaMastro44!)
(As an aside, can't wait for @morninggloria's Hysteria Pod to drop!)
9/
If you've made it this far along with me, thank you. Hope it helped on this hard day/week/month. Chin up, keep working hard, plugging along. We can do this.

Fin/.
