I am #OneOfThe3Million and have been since 1992. Got my National Insurance number, Indefinite Leave to Remain; have studied, worked, paid tax, co-founded a business, employ people; know how to make a decent cup of tea. This is my home. But now I’ll have to apply to stay.1/6
I wrote to the Home Office to ask if my Indefinite Leave to Remain from back in pre-Finland joining the EU would be enough. They sent me a copy of the letter that said I can stay indefinitely, accompanied by another letter saying it didn’t count as proof.2/6
If there is a silver lining to Brexit, it is that a lot of people like me have had our eyes opened about the deliberate difficulties, incompetence and cruelty of the Home Office. And I now understand what other foreign-born people here have had to put up with.3/6
Please consider this, if you are native-born here: whatever they are doing to us and can get away with, they might try something similar or worse with you. Have your holidays, parental leave, NHS, protection from unfair dismissal, human rights... taken away.4/6
Don’t give them a blank cheque. Please consider speaking out about our treatment, even if it doesn’t seem to directly impact you just now.5/6
And this is for people of the UK & USA: if you care more about party politics than of your neighbour, ask yourself why. Why is allegiance to a party and a slogan more important than protecting yourself and your fellow human beings? Who convinced you of this? 6/6
