This week’s overshadowed-by-Helsinki news:

Cambridge Analytica's servers were accessed in Russia or from Russian IP addresses AND that access appears to have been Facebook data.

Plus links to Trump #thread

google.com/amp/s/amp.theg…
Discovered in this highly recommended July 19 @npr @nprfreshair interview with @carolecadwalla about #cambridgeAnalytica

npr.org/2018/07/19/630…
I did not know that Trump introduced Nigel Farage at a Mississippi rally and said “if Brexit can happen in Britain, then I can get elected in the United States.”
Robert Mercer started #CambridgeAnalytica and was a main donor to Trump’s campaign

Steve Bannon was vice president for Cambridge Analytica and Trump’s campaign manager.
In 2012, Bannon opened a London branch of Breitbart to support Nigel Farage's mission to take Britain out of the EU.

Farage thanked Bannon and Breitbart on the day that Article 50, the formal process of leaving the European Union, was triggered.
There’s another link between Trump and Brexit: Arron Banks, who is married to a Russian and “gave more money towards the Brexit campaign than any other person in Britain”. He’s the subject of an investigation; where does his money come from?
“His wealth is all, if it exists, is offshore in these sort of dark money structures in tax havens.” @carolecadwalla
Banks has a close relationship with the Russian ambassador in London, Ambassador Yakovenko. Mueller calls him “a high-level contact between the Trump campaign in the Kremlin.” Enter the indicted George Papadopoulos.
On the same day in November 2015 that Banks launched his official Brexit campaign run by Farage ... the Leave EU campaign... Banks had a meeting with the Russian ambassador.
“The question about whether Banks was used as a conduit for Russian money to help fund the Brexit campaign is being investigated now by the U.S. House Intelligence Committee.” Terry Gross
“And it comes back to, time and time again, the role of Silicon Valley in these elections is the really, really key thing.” @carolecadwalla
Last week Britain fined Facebook the maximum for its data leak that powered Cambridge Analytica

google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.…
And the British Information Commissioner's Office has 40 full-time investigators and is coordinating with Mueller.
“It's ... the fact that their head offices were in Britain and that they were processing U.S. voters' data in Britain that has enabled this [investigation] to happen.” @carolecadwalla
I agree with @carolecadwalla here: “I kind of think that Facebook considers the rest of the world as lesser, as less consequential, as less important”
“I really do very seriously think that Britain should consider banning Facebook from having any role in any of our elections because if you've got a foreign company which is playing an absolutely pivotal role in your elections but yet it's completely unaccountable...”
It’s also @twitter
This week the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Twitter account, the Kremlin, targeted @carolecadwalla (fake news claim) while defending Arron Banks and Nigel Farage.
“this is like an act of warfare against independent media, against the press” ... while Twitter twiddles its thumbs.
Earlier, Arron Banks and Nigel Farage's campaign had retweeted the Russian Embassy when it was accusing @carolecadwalla of being “a bad journalist and with an agenda”
“They did this...mock video of me” using a clip from "Airplane!" They superimposed Carole’s face on a woman acting hysterical. “People ... slap her around the face, and then they threaten her with a gun.” They added the Russian national anthem to the soundtrack.
“thousands of people actually reported that to Twitter and to the police and to Leave.EU and it didn't come down.”

This is information warfare.

Dear @resistbot developers

STOP asking for DOB which you are linking to first and last names and phone over insecure SMS.

I’m stunned. This is the sort of info we opposed Trump’s gathering en masse last year.

#justSayNo to today’s ask about being registered to vote.
Reminder that @resistbot org fails basic transparency test on “about” page.

You can find two names buried near the bottom of long, densely-packed about page. No details/links.

“In a 2014 address to Yale Law students, [Kavanaugh] recalled a night of ‘group chugs’ in Boston that ended with his group “falling out of the bus onto the front steps of Yale Law School at about 4:45 a.m.”
nytimes.com/2018/09/28/us/…
Drinking to excess is not synonymous with blacking out (having memory gaps). Kavanaugh implied the former by denying the latter.
Kavanaugh claimed it was “legal to drink” in his senior year. Not true. The legal drinking age in Maryland had been raised to 21 before he turned 18. And 1982, the summer in question, was the summer BEFORE his senior year. He turned 18 in 1983.

Welcome to global rule by capitalists.

Do you want ANY corporation monitoring your whereabouts and behavior 24x7? Hell no.

And a reminder that “insurance” wasn’t created to help the most secure/fit. Franklin’s vision: to spread risk throughout a community.

Insurance as envisioned by Benjamin Franklin was the opposite of individualism (an American myth with long legs).

Lost in the fevered GOP rhetoric that there is a proverbial time-bomb counting down on the Kavanaugh nomination:

In 2016, some in the GOP said they’d not let Clinton appoint a SCOTUS justice.
h/t @KevinMKruse

pbs.org/newshour/polit…
These “omg we have to vote now else democracy is lost” hypocrites held open a SCOTUS justice seat for ONE YEAR AND 53 DAYS because they did not want the country’s first black president to make that appointment.

washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-m…
The GOP rhetoric is classic 1984-doublespeak (AKA bullsh*t).

CLAIM: The FBI does not investigate charges like those made by Dr. Blasey.

FACT: the FBI investigated Anita Hill’s allegation.

"In the face of warnings that climate change was making" storms like Florence "more common" NC created an 'insurer of last resort' and "has written policies for thousands of coastal properties worth tens of billions of dollars." #NoFederalBailOutForNC
propublica.org/article/hurric…
Why did the NC politicians do this?
Because "nationally known insurance companies pulled out of the state’s coastal communities". You know, they assessed the risk and said 'hell no.'
State Farm stopped writing new homeowner policies for houses within a mile of the ocean in 2006. By the end of 2008, Farmers Insurance and Encompass Insurance joined SF.
