Brand new Texas group sues Harvard and NYU Law Reviews this weekend claiming reverse discrimination. Lawyer on case: Trump nominee

Harvard filed Sat. NYU on Sun.

Timing a coincidence? I think not.

Story also @ law.com (paywall) Complainant : Texas-based ‘Faculty, Alumni and Students Opposed to Racial Preferences’

From @Bloomberg- goal to “restore meritocracy at American universities by eliminating the use of race and sex preferences.”

Frivolous suit: no individuals named as having been harmed

Dear @resistbot developers

STOP asking for DOB which you are linking to first and last names and phone over insecure SMS.

I’m stunned. This is the sort of info we opposed Trump’s gathering en masse last year.

#justSayNo to today’s ask about being registered to vote. Reminder that @resistbot org fails basic transparency test on “about” page.

Nothing about how they manage your data, protect your #privacy , who is advisory board, who makes decisions, etc. #Opaque.

“In a 2014 address to Yale Law students, [Kavanaugh] recalled a night of ‘group chugs’ in Boston that ended with his group “falling out of the bus onto the front steps of Yale Law School at about 4:45 a.m.”
nytimes.com/2018/09/28/us/… Drinking to excess is not synonymous with blacking out (having memory gaps). Kavanaugh implied the former by denying the latter.

Welcome to global rule by capitalists.

Example of news-release-“reporting” or zero curiosity on the part of the writer.

And a reminder that “insurance” wasn’t created to help the most secure/fit. Franklin’s vision: to spread risk throughout a community.

Lost in the fevered GOP rhetoric that there is a proverbial time-bomb counting down on the Kavanaugh nomination:

In 2016, some in the GOP said they’d not let Clinton appoint a SCOTUS justice.
h/t @KevinMKruse

pbs.org/newshour/polit… These “omg we have to vote now else democracy is lost” hypocrites held open a SCOTUS justice seat for ONE YEAR AND 53 DAYS because they did not want the country’s first black president to make that appointment.

"In the face of warnings that climate change was making" storms like Florence "more common" NC created an 'insurer of last resort' and "has written policies for thousands of coastal properties worth tens of billions of dollars." #NoFederalBailOutForNC
propublica.org/article/hurric… Why did the NC politicians do this?
Because "nationally known insurance companies pulled out of the state’s coastal communities". You know, they assessed the risk and said 'hell no.'

At @noaafish_wcro public hearing on Southern Resident Orca Recovery and J50.

Q: which is preferred, “Orca” or “killer whale”? Investments in research (seems like spinning wheels) - reduced salmon harvest - $$$ in salmon recovery. Critical to achieve sustainable wild salmon populations for both salmon and whale recovery.

Storm surge built up over of several days, starting when #florence was a cat 4 or strong cat 3 storm. That "baked in” the roughly-10ft storm surge from Cape Hatteras to Myrtle Beach, NC.
@MichaelEMann at gu.com/p/9ckb6/stw Because warmer oceans mean more moisture in the atmosphere, "for each 1C of warming, there is about 7% more moisture in the air". #florencehurricane is generating about 10% more rainfall due to 1.5C-above-normal temps, increasing risk of additional inland flooding.

Our justice system isn't.

In Washington state, Branson Myers, a 22-year-old, crossed the center line with his truck and KILLED two motorcyclists and severely injured two others. He "may have fallen asleep behind the wheel."

The charge? Second-degree negligent driving ... a traffic infraction subject to a $250 fine.

This @CJR @lyzl essay is gold.

It reinforces @chucktodd essay in @TheAtlantic about Roger Ailes and FOX 'news': "Ailes helped destroy Dukakis by making him seem an other to many Americans."

@TuckerCarlson stokes fear of "the other" for personal gain

cjr.org/the_profile/tu… Read it.

Then think about who @TuckerCarlson's propaganda benefits. (Tucker Carlson inherited wealth and has a net worth of more than $8 million.)

ninersnation.com/2016/9/1/12761… The Star Spangled Banner was born in the War of 1812. Francis Scott Key, the author of the poem in 1814, owned slaves.

The third verse “claims that the ‘foul footsteps’ of the slaves who fought on the side of the British have polluted America.”

This article - and those of its ilk - do more harm than good. RELATIVE RISK? NOPE.

Most of us don’t understand risk at all. We’re innumerate.

Any health-related article for lay people that does not provide context for risk should Not see daylight. Plus, I’ve done the research on breast cancer risk and alcohol. There’s a real threshold effect there, too.

Mike Malone, the consultant who recommended closing voting precincts in Randolph County, Georgia "told residents that [GOP Gubernatorial candidate Kemp] recommended precinct consolidation." Of course, he told the @ajc "that he didn’t recall hearing the [former] secretary of state say that." Notice the @ajc reporter doesn't ID Kemp as GOP candidate in this graph.

The most in-depth and critical examination of WV's proposed mobile app voting (@Voatz) is from @DerSPIEGEL but it falls prey to the claim of "cumbersome absentee ballots" for service members. SOS Mac Warner KNOWS better.

spiegel.de/international/… WV service and overseas voters can receive ballots electronically and return them by email or fax. It's a transparent process. How "cumbersome" is that?
