Can we talk about the global "we"?

"We" is a big word in climate discourse. Just today I've seen a number of responses to #SR15 that use it, as in "we're fucking this up."

I'm here to say that this "we" is a fictional construct: ideological, obfuscatory, and dangerous.

1/n
Who is this "we"? Does it include the nearly one billion people who live on less than 2 dollars a day?

worldbank.org/en/topic/pover…

2/n
Does it include the +/- 5.5 billion people who live on between 2-10 dollars a day?

1/10 Last night @IPCC_Ch released #SR15 - this report should shake any lingering complacency, delay, and denial out of every country, and spur us all to action. #IPCC #SR15 ipcc.ch/report/sr15/ @IPCC_CH
2/10 Slashing carbon pollution in 10 years & essentially eliminating it by 2050 is the century-defining challenge. One that demands we revisit the terms of the discussion for what it means to address #climatechange. #IPCC #SR15 wapo.st/2zYnGOw @chriscmooney @brady_dennis
3/10 Given the threat our planet faces, one step we must take is to end technology tribalism in picking how we cut emissions. #IPCC #SR15

Today much of the world's population lives safer, more comfortable, healthier, longer, more productive lives than ever before. And yet, around half of the global population currently lacks access to enough electricity, and 1.2bn people have no access at all. #IPCC 1/n
Global electricity access is rising, which is improving the lives of millions. But this means our decarbonisation challenge is even greater, since we not only have to replace our entire fossil fuel infrastructure, but probably double it to meet rising global energy demand. #IPCC
The question is where will this energy to come from? A: Right now, mainly from #coal. #IPCC

This is the issue of our time. The fight of our lives. Brexit and Trump are a trifle compared to sea level rise, crop failures, climate refugees...

We need to act NOW.

#IPCC #ClimateChange @GeorgeMonbiot @1010
There are all sorts of things we can do as individuals e.g:

- Reduce car usage
- Switch to green energy supplier
- Improve home insulation
- Eat less meat
But most importantly, governments need to feel the pressure to:

- Ditch fossil fuels
- Ban fracking
- Properly support renewables

And this is just for starters.

Any party that doesn't support these as an absolute minimum doesn't deserve to even be on the ballot sheet.

The @UN has just released its most detailed report on #climatechange.

It does not make for pretty reading: yahoo.com/news/un-warns-…
The short version: unless we can limit temperature rise to 1.5C, we are all screwed.
The report details two scenarios:

1.5C hotter, and 2C hotter. These are set out in the Paris climate treaty, where nations agreed to limit temperature rises to "well below" 2C and to 1.5C if at all possible.

The two are not the same futures.

Steeling myself with a strong coffee to sit down and read major new report on avoiding dangerous #climatechange (@IPCC_CH #SR15, available here: ipcc.ch/report/sr15/). My takes to follow (1/n)
As always, the #peerreview effort by @IPCC_CH is Herculean. A couple hundred volunteer scientists read & cited 6,000+ studies to support conclusions w/ evidence. Responded to 42,001 comments in 3 rounds of review. The most robust process there is to establish scientific consensus
Now, this #SR15 report title is descriptive, but doesn't exactly roll off the tongue...

"It's nighttime in Donald Trump's America." If @Will_Bunch wrote it, you should read it.
@Will_Bunch 2/ "Worst part. In its unyielding effort to bend environmental rules to the will of its corporate patrons, Trump decided to stop arguing #ClimateChange is a hoax, instead acknowledge catastrophic climate change is so locked in for there is nothing humankind can do about it."
3/ "Team Trump has found a way to turn climate denial into something even worse — climate nihilism, the belief that the party's almost over so tonight Big Pollution might as well party like it's 2099."

Just left wild press briefing w/#Macron. I think this is BIG. He was asked if he supports a NewGlobalDeal on trade and globalism. He said yes. And he thinks ALL nations should agree, "don't sign trade deals w/countries that are not compliant w/the Paris Accords" on [MORE]
2.) On #climatechange . I asked, since USA pulled out of Paris Accord, does that mean France will no longer trade w/America? He angrily backtracked a bit, suggesting there can be individual trade deals w US as long as they don't violate the Accords. But he ended calling 4 [more]
3.) Measures to strengthen the euro so that Europe is in a better position to counter such things and "no one currency dominates trade," which I took as a counterpoint to USA.

Short lap. Check out the horn on that caterpillar, though!
I was gonna start a 🦆 party hashtag, but there was some weird stuff associated with that. Seriously, always check before you start a hashtag.
There was some serious jostling and splashing going on. My guess is it’s the feisty young adults, testing their feathers.

@EricHolthaus Now let's talk about solutions. First of all, slow the bleeding. QUIT CLOSING #NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS. Oyster Creek shutting down is like taking a baseball bat to over 5 Ivanpah solar plants; it produced ~5400 GWh zero-GHG per year vs Ivanpah's 990 GWh.
@EricHolthaus The replacement power isn't coming from solar and wind, guys. It's coming from natural gas and coal. Solar and wind can't compete with the kind of reliable capacity factor Oyster Creek delivered 24/7.
@EricHolthaus #nuclear power stations that are "unprofitable" are largely so because of cheap natural gas + renewables forcing nuke operators to deal with negative electricity prices. atomicinsights.com/why-cant-exist… NG won't be cheap forever, but #climatechange will continue getting worse.

My thread yesterday re #TyphoonMangkhut went viral. Impossible to reply all so here is a general 👇

To all the kind concerned people: we are all safe. Back to work today.

To media: we r not defined by the disaster we encounter, but how we encounter it. Report that too pls. 1/
2/ to the #ClimateChange deniers who attacked me: keep sleep walking, geniuses.

To many who don’t know HK: the typhoon didn’t cut off our gas, electricity, internet. Everything worked fine. The first responders started 2 work during the typhoon. #HK is bouncing back already.
3/ To the people of #HK: i wasn’t born nor brought up here, but HK is home. There is no other place I can think of w such ability to bounce back w efficiency, resilience, & amazing work ethics. Our city has lagged behind in the last years but I’m profoundly proud & bullish #HK.

The UK could be #CarbonNeutral by 2050, meeting its #ParisAgreement targets, according to a new report from The Royal Society and @RAEngNews. Here are 8 technologies and approaches that could be vital (a thread) royalsociety.org/greenhouse-gas…
Forestation – whether it’s replacing lost trees or creating new forests, this technique means more trees. Better management could remove as much as 12 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Habitat restoration – 80% of the UK’s wetlands, peatlands & coastal habitats are considered to be in poor condition. Restoring these could prevent previously trapped carbon from escaping, & store up to 18 tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare per year royalsociety.org/topics-policy/…

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

1. The weaponization of our society seems to cover just about every facet of #American lifestyle. From life's necessities to technology, to media, even our governing agencies. We have to ask: #WhereDoesItAllEnd?.. in #MartialLaw?

#EverythingWeaponized
2. Let's first define what it means to '#Weaponize'. It's simple...do the opposite of what something is supposed to do:

A. Make drinking water unsafe
B. Make food poisonous instead of nutritious
C. Allow @TheJusticeDept to let crime flourish
D. Turn our news into lies: #FakeNews
3. Clearly, the single greatest threat to our society and our entire earth is #GeoEngineering - the spraying of our skies by both military & commercial aircraft.

Just #Lookup!.. it's not hard to spot But what are the motives? We've heard it all. #Chemtrails #OpChemtrails #HAARP

While we are all working to importantly save this country by electing Democrats to #FlipTheHouse and #FlipTheSenate in November-

Electing Democratic state governors is extremely important, too. They can be an important line of defense at the state level. 1/6
State governors can:
✅Help #SaveTheACA
✅Help save and expand #Medicare
✅Protect #NetNeutrality
✅Protect the environment and deal with #climatechange
✅Help end #Gerrymandering and voter suppression.
✅Enact #GunSense legislation.
✅Protect abortion rights.
And more. 2/6
Here are governors' seats we need to hold or are competitive to flip. Please follow, donate, add them to your RT lists, & if you are local, get involved with their campaigns on the ground. Candidates all through primary elections.

I suppose we can safely say that now #TheFrighteners have been so successfully and publicly put on a certain sector their combined angst will spew a diarrhoea of spin & warp whilst trying to use THAT VERY THING to generate $£Es Some with automated AdTech software already bought.
2/ Some bought by gormless companies, by mistake, some in full knowledge or partial knowledge of what it could do. It will be interesting as time goes on to see who apparently DIDN'T CARE about the likely instigation of its more negative 'dark' capabilities looking to 'side-step'
3/ or even 'wrong-foot' Irish & EU regulation standards, & possibly law. This too is a kind of #climatechange & #ClimateAction in itself, a would be mammoth untouchable iceberg of 'dominion' & 'control' being melted out into an ocean of citizens' scrutiny & advancement for change

If only we'd elected the woman who not only believed in #ClimateChange, but had a plan for #ClimateAction.

Trump has nine grandchildren and doesn't even seem to care if they have a livable planet when they are adults, let alone the rest of us.
In the press conference with Trump last year, President Niinistö of Finland said:

"If we lose the arctic, we lose the globe."

We can't ignore #ClimateChange, which can be seen and felt--worsening storms like #HurricaneLane, the fire seasons, flooding.

Realized too late that I meant to start prefacing all major news stories with OMG!!!! to get folks' attention.
This story really is OMG-worthy.
It's terrifying.
Each successive summer is the hottest on record.
We must pay attention to what our planet is telling us.

@cjjacobsJacobs @CDU @JuliaKloeckner @annewill 1. Various questions need to be asked:
a) Is the #earth getting warmer? Answer Yes (but was ven warmer in the past)
b) Human impact on climate (CO2)? A: Yes, but science differ on size of impact.
@cjjacobsJacobs @CDU @JuliaKloeckner @annewill 2.
c) #Germany produces 2% of all CO2 - So if we all live in tents tomorrow & only ride bicycles will it make a big difference? A: No, but the Chinese & Americans won't stop laughing!
#AnneWill #Klimawandel #ClimateChange
@cjjacobsJacobs @CDU @JuliaKloeckner @annewill 3.
So I like a debate on points a) to c) purely based on #science (and "a consensus of paid lobbyscientists" is not science, but politics) & come up with workable solutions.
PS: Currently #China produces around 26% of all man-made CO2.

Real life Iron Man, aka @elonmusk has big plans for humanity.

He appears to be invested in a bunch of random ventures; rockets, $TSLA cars, tunnels..

But I think it's all connected. He's doing all of this with a very simple goal: the long-term survival of humanity.

A thread:
1/ #climatechange or #GlobalWarming is a huge threat. 14% of ghg emissions are from transportation, and 25% from electricity and heat generation. This is where @Tesla comes in. By electrifying our vehicle fleet, we can already eliminate a big chunk of emissions.
2/ The Semi will probably save more CO2 than all other #Tesla vehicles combined. Trucks drive an insane amount of miles compared to cars, & they pull a lot of cargo.

Second part of this is the energy generation & storage with Tesla Energy. Greenify the grid 👉 less CO2 emissions
