Steeling myself with a strong coffee to sit down and read major new report on avoiding dangerous #climatechange (@IPCC_CH #SR15, available here: ipcc.ch/report/sr15/). My takes to follow (1/n)
As always, the #peerreview effort by @IPCC_CH is Herculean. A couple hundred volunteer scientists read & cited 6,000+ studies to support conclusions w/ evidence. Responded to 42,001 comments in 3 rounds of review. The most robust process there is to establish scientific consensus
Now, this #SR15 report title is descriptive, but doesn't exactly roll off the tongue...

How Total is integrating #climate into its strategy?
1/6
We are positioned in fast-growing #lowcarbon markets, which means we offer an #energy mix whose carbon intensity is steadily decreasing.
2/6
In support of this change, we have created a tool for measuring the #carbon intensity of the #energy products we make available to our customers. That metric indicates the average of our products’ greenhouse gas emissions.

Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the UN General Assembly says that the Westphalian system of nation-states, aka nationalism, failed. He warns against a return to this discredited unilateral model which led to so much bloodshed.
Macron warns that the current environment is not a blip. Things are not about to go back to normal. There is a crisis of the entire international system, and this is a moment of profound danger.
Macron: "After the second world war, for several decades, we saw a balance that was based on blocs. Then there was the emergence of superpowers. For several years now we've seen new global instability characterised by multiple centers of power."

In a report dated 24 September 2011 Port Jackson Partners presented a report that predicted residential electricity price would rise from 20.4 c/kWh in 2011 to 36.3 c/kWh in 2017.
Increases in the price of coal and natural gas were the first two factors identified as the cause.
The IPA produced a report on the #ParisAgreement that assumes the cost of electricity has increased since 2007 for no other reason than emission-reduction policies. 👎 #auspol #ICYMI @DanielWildIPA

1. We have released a major new report, "Fulfilling America's Pledge," that estimates the impact that actions by states, cities, & businesses can have on U.S. GHG emissions to 2025 & beyond. This thread reviews the major results. @AmericasPledge @GCAS2018 americaspledgeonclimate.com/fulfilling-ame…
2. After Trump announced his intent to withdraw from Paris in June of 2017, within 72 hours a coalition of over 2,700 cities, states, businesses, universities, faith groups and more came together to say @wearestillin. That coalition now numbers more than 3,000.
3. That coalition is not only large in number but also globally significant. It represents more than half of the U.S. population (173 million), nearly 60% of US GDP ($11.4 trillion), and if it were a country would be the world's 3rd largest economy and 4th largest GHG emitter.

The UK could be #CarbonNeutral by 2050, meeting its #ParisAgreement targets, according to a new report from The Royal Society and @RAEngNews. Here are 8 technologies and approaches that could be vital (a thread) royalsociety.org/greenhouse-gas…
Forestation – whether it’s replacing lost trees or creating new forests, this technique means more trees. Better management could remove as much as 12 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Habitat restoration – 80% of the UK’s wetlands, peatlands & coastal habitats are considered to be in poor condition. Restoring these could prevent previously trapped carbon from escaping, & store up to 18 tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare per year royalsociety.org/topics-policy/…

@ASKusmer @ddimick @onthemedia @InsideNatGeo @DrTempleGrandin @nytimes e.g., the core narrative that CO2-driven warming is a "problem to solve." Given known knowns on social, CO2 fronts, seems far more an emergent risk to work on in a sustained way. The attached slide puts this in the context of other "War On.." issues. 1/
@ASKusmer @ddimick @onthemedia @InsideNatGeo @DrTempleGrandin @nytimes @wenstephenson @UNFCCC @CFigueres “We’re not going to solve climate change,” said @cfigueres in opening #AspenIdeas chat with @DLeonhardt & former Obama lead negotiator Todd Stern. First, there’s the $43,000 soundproof phone booth Pruitt had installed in his office – which btw violates federal spending laws. Maybe @EPAScottPruitt is trying to hide something?
Then we learned that Pruitt was renting DC condo owned by an energy lobbyist with dealings at the EPA - for $50 a night. What does $50 a night in DC usually get you? 👇

As clean renewable energy continues to grow at an unprecedented pace, the highest emitting countries are driving toward their #ParisAgreement commitments. In 2017, more than half of new electricity capacity in each of the top 4 carbon emitters came from #wind & #solar.
In China (28% of global emissions), wind + solar = 55% of new electricity capacity in 2017, according to @rhodium_group: bit.ly/2rOuD2K
In the United States (15% of global emissions), wind + solar = 62% of new electricity capacity in 2017, according to @BCSECleanEnergy & @BloombergNEF: bit.ly/235kHtT
