Let me explain why this is a bad defense of Trump's trade policy:
1) Evidence that is trump's goal is scarce. Thus far we have only seen increasing tariffs and Trump has repeatedly said he is fine with that, which is consistent with his lifelong support for protectionism.
2) Many of Trump's tariffs have actually been targeted at countries who already have lower average tariff rates than us. (Ex: Canada overall rate on all products = 1.56% vs. U.S. was 1.67% in 2016 via the World Bank).
When confronted with this fact, Trump has babbled about trade deficits (which are not bad) & repeatedly deflected by pointing out tariffs on specific products being high which makes no sense as an excuse for him raising tariffs on completely different products/raw materials.
3) The harms from a trade war: increased prices for most Americans, job losses, bailouts etc. far outweigh any potential gain of slightly lowering already historically low barriers among our trade partners. How is crashing our economy to get Canada from 1.6% to .8% worth it?
Also, countries like China will always win a trade war because they don't care about harms to their own consumers compared to producers. As the richest country in the world, we lose with our own tariffs AND retaliatory tariffs applies by other countries.
4) The whole premise of these actions is that we are somehow suffering due to our trade deals. In fact, we have low unemployment and actually benefit immensely from every one of our trade deals. They are the reason we are so wealthy.
5) The obsession with "fairness" is the real problem here and people on the right should recognize and condemn it because it's the same argument used with income inequality. Is it more important that we have equal tariff rates or that Americans are better off?
No different than Margaret Thatcher's famous "you'd rather the poor were poorer line":
Do you care more about Americans being better off or saying that we have equal rates just for things to be fair? Fairness is only good if it benefits us.
Trumps' trade policies are just as bad and harmful as any of Bernie Sanders' big government proposals, with a track record for failure which is just as clear. No one who attacks Sanders' socialism should be defending Trump on this.
6) Lastly, every country has been steadily reducing their tariff rates long before Trump started with his trade war. We could easily end up with "better deals" without putting Americans through unjustifiable economic pain.
H/t @scottlincicome for that last chart. There is no better follow for this topic (you can mute the rest of his tweets). #FF

That whole article is full of smears and history re-writes that dishonest leftists have been using for years to avoid actually debating people on the right.
He literally just copied them word for word.
You can recognize that the Republican Party has serious faults and went off-track without smearing decades of Republicans with historically-ignorant nonsense.
Seriously, NBC identifies Ken as a reporter. His byline was on several embarrassing stories over the last few weeks. His commentary has been shameless, partisan, and dishonest.
Are there no standards?
Of courses this “reporter” also retweeted this nonsense from another “journalist”.
Another rule he wants changed because the left lost. Also, as has been noted, she’s not even factually correct: GWB won the popular vote in 2004 before both his picks.
Any objective person could see that last few weeks have been among the worst for the media in recent history. They abandoned all standards & started acting out as activists. Much of that was on Twitter which I won't rehash, but I want to put some of the worst examples in 1 place:
NBC News was the worst outlet by far. They had 4 awful viral stories that fell apart and were embarrassing. Notice the overlap in reporters.
The New Yorker came in a close second with their two awful stories from Ronan Darrow and Jane Mayer. Here is my full thread going through both of those stories:
Official vote isn't until tomorrow and things can always change, but there are a few things I want to say: The last few weeks have been exhausting for everyone. I want to thank all the people that tried to get the truth out there and that sent encouraging tweets/messages.
A media/Dem-led mob tried to destroy a good man because he had a judicial philosophy they couldn’t accept. Good people chose to stand against the mob and prioritize the truth. The last few weeks have been terrible for the country, but confirmation is the best possible outcome.
Kavanaugh wasn’t my top choice. The upcoming midterm election wasn’t really a priority for me given the Rep direction. But the Dem/Media behavior over the last month changed all that. They abandoned all standards of decency and professionalism in favor of dishonesty and activism.
In terms of the worst outlets over the last few weeks, NBC News is leading the pack by a mile.
New Yorker, WaPo, CNN etc. all deserve honorable mentions, but NBC reporters have embarrassed themselves on an almost hourly basis.
Remember they printed the story about the anonymous letter allegation, the perjury claim based on the New Yorker story, that Facebook post that was later retracted etc etc.
Most blogs have shown higher standards over the last 2 weeks.
