It is good that there are Republicans and others in the small coalition of #NeverTrump conservatives. But criticizing Trump and/or leaving the Republican Party is insufficient. Never Trumpers and others must do much more to repent. My new .@salon
Many anti-Trump Republicans are concerned about Trump's fascism and other rule breaking. But they are also worried about how history will remember them now. All Republicans and conservatives must be held accountable for how they helped to birth Trumpism's evil. This took decades.
In essence, the #NeverTrump Republicans who now stand against Trump and his movement watered the roots of the tree for years and are now aghast at how it gobbles up innocent passers-by like a monster in a children’s fairytale.
To find some modest amount of salvation, Republicans who truly want to do the right thing for a country they claim to love must renounce their party and leave it behind, while working to repair the damage that Donald Trump and his supporters have done.
Donald Trump is America's Racist-in-Chief. He is literally fulfilling a white supremacist wish list. Trump's most recent gift? Tweeting about "white genocide" in South Africa. My new .@salon
Trump's White House is a den and cabal of white racism with white supremacist and "white nationalist" believers and sympathizers such as Stephen Miller, Michael Anton and Steve Bannon and others writing the speeches and making racist policy.
As Mueller's investigation tightens around Trump and his corrupt administration he will only increase his white racist white supremacist appeals. It will likely not be too long before Trump is chanting white supremacist slogans such as "anti-racism is anti-white".
Donald Trump's White House is a den and hive of racists and others who are aligned with or sympathetic to so-called "white nationalists". Speech writer Darren Beattie is but one such example. My new .@salon
Stephen Miller, Michael Anton, Steve Bannon, Jeff Session, and yes the king of the cabal, Donald Trump have shown through their actions, words, and policies that they are racists in league with and doing the work of a much larger white supremacist ideology and movement.
And it should be no surprise then that Trump's chief economic adviser is longtime friends with Peter Brimelow, a prominent and open white supremacist.
Will there be violence between Republicans and Democrats in Trump's broken America? Political parties are increasingly like sports teams. The Trumpists and other Republicans are soccer hooligans. My new .@salon
Political scientist Liliana Mason's research suggests this is a distinct possibility. Her work also shows that yes there is hyper polarization but Republicans are much more hostile to the groups that comprise the Democratic Party than the other way around.
Republicans are extremely cold and hostile towards nonwhites, gays and lesbians, women, and other groups who they identity as part of the Democratic Party. Democrats have much less hostility towards white men, "Christians", rural Americans and the like.
.@DouthatNYT wants to imagine a post Donald Trump "white strategy" Republican Party. Not possible. The Republican Party is the country's largest white identity organization. Conservatism and racism are now fully one and the same thing. My .@salon
And while superficially challenging a "white strategy" whose roots are in overt open white supremacy. .@DouthatNYT recycles much of the same white racist logic with his caricatures of "anti-whiteness". He might have just said "anti racism is anti white" instead.
.@DouthatNYT also falls down his own "white strategy" rabbit hole with claims that most Republicans and conservatives are not attracted to Trump's racism and white identity politics more generally. Again, empirical reality--and the data--clearly shows otherwise.
James Baldwin can teach us a great deal about Donald Trump's racism towards .@KingJames .@teamlebron and .@donlemon and other black Americans. My new essay .@salon
For example, jealousy and envy of black Americans is at the heart of white racism and white supremacy. This is one of the ways that the emptiness at the heart of Whiteness is filled. .@KingJames and .@donlemon and .@barackobama are better people than Donald Trump could ever be.
James Baldwin explained this in The Fire Next Time. This envy and jealousy also helps to explain Donald Trump's unholy and bizarre obsession with President Barack Obama.
Historian Richard Frankel is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He and I discuss why we must look evil in its eyes and compare the rise of Hitler to what Donald Trump is doing to America and the world.
As professor Frankel warns, if we keep debating if Trump is a fascist and how he may or may not be like Hitler and other authoritarian evildoers it will be too late to do anything to stop him.
Professor Frankel also reminds us that it is not just the leader who is dangerous but the everyday people, the "good Germans" in America who will do Trump's bidding.
