can’t believe I missed the five-year anniversary of this legend throwing back a few brews and swimming across the Detroit River

windsorstar.com/news/local-new… #windsor #YQG
I’ll never forget him calling the newsroom *after getting out of jail* to say 1) that the story needed to clarify that he made it across the river 2) the woman referenced in the story was *not* his girlfriend, despite what she might say.

Best. Summer. Internship. Ever.
Oh man, I totally forgot there was this guy in ’16

"He’s screaming like he’s happy"

news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/he…
Anyway I was looking for an old story I wrote and came across this one which rounds up all the great Windsor stories: buzzfeed.com/emmaloop/times…
(I’ve forgotten what I was looking for in the first place.)

Rick Davis says McCain asked him to read a letter.

“This will be somewhat difficult,” he says, clearing his throat.
McCain's letter begins by thanking Americans for allowing him to serve them.

"I’ve made mistakes but hope my love for America will be weighed favorably against them,” McCain says.
"I lived and died a proud American” — McCain

A little story: McCain was one of the first senators who made this foreigner feel less lost in DC.

I had just gotten on an (usually senators' only...) elevator in the Russell Building. The doors were closing when suddenly an arm shot between them. It was McCain. 1/?
Inside my head I was like, holy shit! I'm in an elevator alone with John McCain! And I was slightly worried he might be mad I was in the elevator. But he wasn't in the slightest. Instead, we asked each other how our days were going. He replied bluntly with some slightly vulgar...
...language that his wasn't going all that great. (Something Trump-related had happened the day before, but I can't remember what). Anyway, then he takes the time to ask me which "outfit" I was with. I replied BuzzFeed and, to my slight surprise, he said he was a fan of our work!

.@MarkWarner on today's Facebook news: “Today’s disclosure is further evidence that the Kremlin continues to exploit platforms like Facebook to sow division and spread disinformation, and I am glad that Facebook is taking some steps to pinpoint and address this activity."
And here's @SenatorBurr to reporters just now: "I'm not sure that this will be the last thing [unintelligible]." He says he was briefed on it.

(If someone got the last part of that quote, let me know!)
.@RepAdamSchiff: "Today's announcement...demonstrates what we've long feared: that malicious foreign actors bearing the hallmarks of previously-identified Russian influence campaigns continue to abuse and weaponize social media platforms to influence the U.S. electorate."

.@ChrisCoons and @JeffFlake are on the Senate floor, about to ask for unanimous consent to adopt this non-binding resolution expressing support for the Russia investigation, agreement with the ICA, and more: coons.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
@ChrisCoons @JeffFlake Flake is going all in on Trump, referencing Orwell’s 1984 and saying what happened in Helsinki was “truly an Orwellian moment."

Bad pic, but @simonamangiante just wrapped up her interview with House Intelligence Committee Democrats after about 4 hours behind closed doors. Quotes to come...
@simonamangiante Mangiante Papadopoulos slightly walked back her comments about her belief that the FBI entrapped her husband George Papadopoulos but said she did tell the committee that she believes he was set up.
Has the White House been in contact with your husband?

Mangiante Papadopoulos: “He can’t, no."
