I am sick & tired of Corbyn supporters whining that Labour can't oppose the government on #Brexit. If Labour can't oppose a bitterly divided minority government pursuing an utterly bankrupt policy then Labour should dissolve itself and let others do the opposing.

And of course these particular Corbynistas are wrong about the facts. Labour has shown that when it is willing and it is joined by Tory defectors it can force the government into desperately close Commons votes on #Brexit.

Some other Corbynistas say that Labour is letting the Tories self-destruct. That is an honest account of what Labour might be doing. However, that tactic runs one big risk.

The majority of Tory MPs will be realising that #Brexit is one almighty fuck-up, and they might well decide that a #PeoplesVote is a convenient escape route. If they do that, Labour will be exposed as an ineffectual fence-sitting party.

Suppose 200 Tory MPs call for a #PeoplesVote. People would ask why that initiative has come from the Tories rather than Labour. Would it be a big risk for the Tories? The Brexiters would squeal and wail, but it's politically risky to oppose giving the decision to the people.

And Labour would be left either having to follow the lead of the Tory moderates or having to side with the Tory Brextremists.

And if I can think this through, as I've just done in 15 minutes, so will a lot of non-ERG Tory MPs.

And if a #PeoplesVote delivered a Remain majority, the Brexiters would froth and fume, but after having spent 2 years ranting about the Will of the People, they would find it all but impossible to gain the political impetus for a major new offensive. It would be game over.
