Thread: Take a look at the ICE news release section of their website and see how they spin things to fit their agenda. ice.gov/news/all
This one is about an ICE officer that raped women while on the job then told them that the police won't help them because he was a federal officer. Headline says arrested on "federal civil rights charges" that "allege" he sexually assaulted 2 women. ice.gov/news/releases/…
That's a strange way to say rape. Also uses "alleges" to cast doubt on the story. It even includes this important note "An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty."
Compare with this one: Honduran man sentenced to nearly 3 years in federal prison for illegally possessing firearm, shooting son of off-duty law enforcement officer ice.gov/news/releases/…
Sounds bad! But read the release. An off-duty officer (so basically just a random guy) confronted the Honduran man, he "brandished a gun" (note how they don't say allegedly for him) then in the resulting conflict the gun went off and hit the man's son in the ankle.
This one still uses the "alleges" language and has the note about what an indictment is but many people won't read past the headline: Federal indictment of MS-13 gang members with murder in aid of racketeering ice.gov/news/releases/…
Homeland Security Investigations does important work like catching child porn producers but when these stories are mixed in with immigration enforcement stories I often wonder if people will mistakenly think that immigrants are involved. ice.gov/news/releases/…
The whole idea of ICE doing press releases is disturbing to me. We know data shows that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes but highlighting the rare cases of truly criminal immigrants appears to be an attempt to make the public believe that we should fear immigrants.
We need to resist ICE's propaganda and also not let them succeed at downplaying their own misconduct and abuse of power. #AbolishICE /end of thread.
