I’m a debt-averse person in general. The kind who uses a credit card like a debit card; who tries not to take on mortgages or in the worst case close them as fast as possible.
But there is one debt that I will continue to carry forever, no matter how much ever I pay it back.
That is the debt of gratitude to this beautiful, tiny, wet, green strip of land called Kerala.
I am what I am because of the goodness that this land and it’s people; and its libraries, schools, colleges and newspapers have infused in me.
Unfortunately, today all this lies in tatters. We all have stood together during the greatest crisis in Kerala’s history and have almost pulled off the first stage - saving lives. This wouldn’t have been possible without the heroic acts of many Indians - thank you all ❤️
But now, it’s time to #ReBuildKerala
This starts with, naturally, helping the affected to rebuild their lives; then putting back together all those things that in total form the goodness of this tiny place.
I’m renewing my debt of gratitude to this place. This is a debt that I’m more than happy - actually proud - to take on. All of us who were born, raised or have lived under the shade of this benevolent tree called Kerala must join together to #RebuildKerala
#RebuildingKerala is going to be a long and arduous task. But, as our CM said yesterday in the press conference, “നമ്മൾ എല്ലാരും കൂടെ അങ്ങ് ഇറങ്യല്ലേ, പിന്നെന്താ പ്രയാസം?"
(“We are going to do it together, aren’t we? Then why worry?”)
Right now, the priority remains unchanged - to save lives, leave no one behind. But in the coming days, the mission to #ReBuildKerala will kick on. And we will know the specifics. The whats, the hows, the details. Let’s all join hands to bring this baby home. To #NammudeKeralam

More specifically, it was the handiwork of Malayala Manorama to bring down chief minister K Karunakaran of INC, as part of the factional fight within INC.
For months Malayalam print media, taking the lead from Manorama, splashed made up bullshit on their front pages - about the ISRO guys’ “espionage activities” and their liaisons with sexy foreign agents. Their lives were trashed just to settle an intra-party factional feud.
The top buzzword in Kerala media in 1994, when this hitjob happened?
This cute little set of cartoons by @pencilashan perfectly captures the sense of togetherness that is binding Kerala - and honours all the good people from everywhere who are helping us overcome this crisis and #RebuildKerala ❤️
+ “Our own Navy!”
Really, Kerala is indebted to our fishermen; heroes who literally came out of the sea like the mythical Poseidon’s soldiers and saved the day ❤️ #RebuildKerala
Went the rounds today with our ward councillor to distribute food kits to flood affected families (those who’ve returned home bec the water has receded), in a mostly working class neighbourhood. After handing out the kits in a few homes we came to a middle class+ looking house+
+and the volunteers were a little hesitant thinking “this house kinda looks rich, will they be offended if we offer a food kit?”. So we checked with the ward councillor who said yes they’re affected as well, they need to be given a package like everyone else.
+ Still hesitant, we knocked the door and the family was basically almost in tears when they thanked everyone for the package. Apparently, their home was under 8ft water and everything was trashed - furniture, utensils, documents, cash, home appliances, two wheeler..
Short thread on the logistics involved in #KeralaFloodRecue and how it is all being put together:
Resources involved as of 18th Aug:
- 22 helicopters
- 83 Indian Navy boats
- 57 NDRF boats
- 5 BSF teams
- 35 Indian Coast Guard teams
- 25 Indian Army Engineering teams
- 58 Kerala Fire Force boats
- 3200 Kerala Fire Force staff
- 40000 Kerala Police
- 600 fishing boats
+ ☝️These resources are managed according to a district-wise plan, each district in-charge being the district collector (DC), who prioritises and deploys resources in that district.
To smoothen out administrative matters, a cabinet minister each is assigned to each district.
