On March 3, 1913, the day before the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson, the city of Washington, D.C. should have been solely abuzz in anticipation of an incoming president-elect, who would have arrived at Union Station and where thousands should be there to greet him. Instead...
...on that particular day, about 5,000 women--including Helen Keller and journalist Nellie Bly--staged a protest parade for women's suffrage down the length of Pennsylvania Ave, demanding the right to vote. An estimated half-a-million spectators gathered to watch.
Many--if not most--of the spectators jeered and catcalled the women as they marched. The jeering soon turned into violence, and the hundreds of policemen assigned to protect the protest either stood silently by or joined in the attacks. Women were beaten with clubs and fists.
BUT WHY AM I NOT ALLOWED TO SING ALONG WITH KENDRICK LAMAR WHOSE MUSIC IS PRIMARILY GEARED TOWARD AN AUDIENCE THAT UNDERSTANDS THE BLACK EXPERIENCE IN AMERICA AND NOT MY LILY-WHITE ASS DO YOU NOT KNOW HE WON THE PULITZER THAT MEANS WHITE PEOPLE GET OWNERSHIP HA CHECKMATE
.@beljak3 This may shock you, but "Alright" is one of my favorite tracks ever, and I can sing along with the words while skipping over the ones I shouldn't say as a white person. VERY COMPLICATED I KNOW.
THE ABILITY TO SING SOME WORDS IN A SONG AND NOT OTHERS IS REALLY HARD APPARENTLY
If you're learning about racism as a theme in American lit or highlighting racism in an academic context, you can reference the n-word as "the n-word".
We mask the presentation of this word in an academic context as a courtesy to those affected by it. Not complicated.
I really there are lot of ass clowns who overthink this in order to have permission to use the word--because god forbid there's a word a white person can't use and must seek rationalization for it--but it's very simple why we don't use it. There is no mystery here.
BUT WHAT IF I WANT TO DO A PHD THESIS SOMEDAY ON THE N-WORD BECAUSE I HAVE SUDDENLY DEVELOPED AN INTEREST IN ACADEMIA
WHAT IF I REALIZE THAT I CAN CURE CANCER BY SAYING IT OUT LOUD I MUST TELL THE WORLD ABOUT MY NEWLY FOUND SUPERPOWER RIGHT AM I RACIST THEN HA CHECKMATE

.@Nadernashed2 Oh, Sweetie... this movement is absolutely a weapon. I'm sorry you've been led to believe it's a polite knock on the door to ask if folks can settle down. No, it's a weapon. We want grave fear to be struck into the hearts of abusers. We want them to be scared.
.@Nadernashed2 And you know why? Because it's been clear for quite some time that the courts do not protect victims, even when the evidence is present, even when abusers confess. They're still given a slap on the wrist. And now, we have arrived at a reckoning.
.@Nadernashed2 So, if you're worried because you once sent a dick pic to some woman or regularly slap unfamiliar women on the ass at the club or make rape jokes, you should be. The patience of survivors ran out long, long ago. And now, we are weaponized.
