On March 3, 1913, the day before the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson, the city of Washington, D.C. should have been solely abuzz in anticipation of an incoming president-elect, who would have arrived at Union Station and where thousands should be there to greet him. Instead... ...on that particular day, about 5,000 women--including Helen Keller and journalist Nellie Bly--staged a protest parade for women's suffrage down the length of Pennsylvania Ave, demanding the right to vote. An estimated half-a-million spectators gathered to watch.

VERY COMPLICATED I KNOW.

If you're learning about racism as a theme in American lit or highlighting racism in an academic context, you can reference the n-word as "the n-word".

We mask the presentation of this word in an academic context as a courtesy to those affected by it. Not complicated. I really there are lot of ass clowns who overthink this in order to have permission to use the word--because god forbid there's a word a white person can't use and must seek rationalization for it--but it's very simple why we don't use it. There is no mystery here.

.@Nadernashed2 Oh, Sweetie... this movement is absolutely a weapon. I'm sorry you've been led to believe it's a polite knock on the door to ask if folks can settle down. No, it's a weapon. We want grave fear to be struck into the hearts of abusers. We want them to be scared. .@Nadernashed2 And you know why? Because it's been clear for quite some time that the courts do not protect victims, even when the evidence is present, even when abusers confess. They're still given a slap on the wrist. And now, we have arrived at a reckoning.

This email @MichaelAvenatti just sent to the Chief Counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee is a bit hard to read, but he poses six questions he'd like to ask Kavanaugh regarding the claims of the client Avenatti represents. (thread)

****TRIGGER WARNING: RAPE**** "1. Did you ever target one or more women for sex or rape at a house party? Did you ever assist Mark Judge or others in doing so?"

"2. Did you ever attend any house party during which a woman was gang raped or used for sex by multiple men?"

If Kavanaugh were of the highest judicial caliber that's been insisted by the Republican Party, he would call for a thorough investigation to clear his name before this nomination proceeds. He would demand a special counsel or the FBI or even state police investigate. (thread) But instead, we've witnessed the same exact posture he's displayed with everything else in his nomination process: a refusal to answer basic questions, silence over the release of his records, demurring over transparency in general, and obfuscating anything remotely unfavorable.

The sexual abuse occurred over ten years. Most of the time, I denied that what happened actually happened. Because when it's your mother, you find ways to rationalize the behavior, even when, by any objective viewpoint, it should clearly be abuse. (thread)

#WhyIDidntReport I said nothing to no one. I felt our already chaotic, abusive household would explode, and denial is a very powerful thing. Who would protect me? Who would protect us?

Soooo... ya girl is turning 32 in a few weeks (10/12), and for my birthday this year, I'm raising money for @runningstart, an organization that empowers young women and non-binary folks to run for office and engage in public service! But wait, it get so much better... Because when you make a donation to said fundraiser:

1. I follow your account.
2. I give you a RT of anything you want (within reason).
3. I send you a handwritten "thank you" note.

So far, LOTS of folks have taken me up on this: @cathlyns, @katemacaluso, @owensbeeeee...

I turned 13 a few months prior to Train's "Drops of Jupiter" release as a single. My birthday dinner was okay. My father took me to a steak house to mark my "official entrance into manhood". It's okay. The steak was okay. The convo was okay. It's okay. Everything will be okay. At this point, was it ten years of everything being okay? I hadn't really kept count. It wasn't something I monitored, or wanted to. It was just there: a gnawing feeling that something just wasn't right. With my body. With my soul. Something is missing. Or maybe should be.

Hi folks! My birthday is on Oct. 12th (yay, 32!), and every year, to celebrate, I do a fundraiser for @runningstart, an org here in D.C. that trains + empowers young women and non-binary folks in high school and college to run for office + be leaders in public service. (thread) Increasing the representation of women and non-binary folks in elected office is an issue near and dear to my heart, and starting folks early in life on that path is crucial to them leading down the road. So, here's my goal...

Could not watch the garbage fire on MSNBC for more than 30 seconds. Just couldn’t do it. The cognitive dissonance even now is astounding. I don't wanna have a goddamn beer with my president. I want them to know how to do their damn jobs. I don't want the popular kid. I don't want the class clown. I want the girl at the front of the class who keeps raising her hand because she did her homework and has the answers.

There is a LOUD rally on Capitol Hill right now against Kavanaugh. Folks have shown up ready to fight.

#StopKavanaugh “Any woman who has faced a pregnancy she does not want knows how terrifying that moment is... you know who doesn’t understand that? The men sitting in that room considering a nominee for the Supreme Court.”

This week, I met with Barry Gutin, co-owner of Cuba Libre, in a mediation hosted by the Office of @DCHumanRights. Barry came to the meeting with the intention of listening, learning, and committing to doing better. Our conversation was frank, cooperative, and productive. (thread) I, too, am very pleased with the resolution we reached. Among all the policy and training changes listed in this release, I want to emphasize that Cuba Libre is partnering with @CasaRubyDC to help ensure other area restaurants are fully LGBTQ-inclusive. A wonderful thing.

Yeah, I did within hours of the news breaking. She preyed on a 17 year-old. But let's be honest, Sweetie: you don't give a shit about the kid she exploited. You just feel threatened by feminists and feel totally comfortable using that kid's pain for your shitty agenda. Classy. Women can be sexual predators and rapists and pedophiles, regardless of their relationship to the victim or "respectability" or whatever other nonsense.

And you know how I know this?

Hey folks, don't take this the wrong way, but sending your transgender friends articles about whatever conservative media personality having a transgender fetish is just... not okay. At all. Don't do that. And while we're at it, even with the best of intentions, sending your transgender friends articles about trans folks who have been murdered or abused is probably ill-advised unless you have an understanding with them. These things can be triggering. Just please be aware.

Sweetie, I served in the U.S. Army for six years, while I assume you were content with buying yellow ribbon car magnets to show off how "patriotic" you are. I took an oath you didn't have the courage to take. And my service is not yours to exploit. You're welcome. Goddamn, I am so sick and tired of this National Anthem bullshit. These assholes watch "Band of Brothers" and think they're experts on military service. The white fragility is blatant and galling. The cowardice is embarrassing.

It's probably appropriate that tonight especially illustrates the profound feeling of loss in this country across the political spectrum: that of an adult leading our nation. We seem to be a country without leadership, and that's most glaring on days of immense feeling. (thread) Tonight, the Obamas released an official statement from his personal office on the death of Sen. John McCain. As did the Clintons. As will the Bushes. And Carter. These statements have been carefully considered, worded, and prepped ahead of time.

And Trump? A 21-word tweet.

In 1980, a psychiatric nurse at Chicago's Michael Reese Hospital (and mother of two) divorced her husband in the midst of a particularly troubled married life and decided to pursue her lifelong dream of an acting career. She was 40. She had a poignant catalyst: her mother's deathbed confession that she regretted not pursuing her own dreams. So, this woman, with no previous experience or training in acting, signed up for classes at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago.
