It's official. Brexit is the greatest act of self harm that a country has ever imposed on itself. I'm reading the House of Commons Breifing Paper now, and what the country is doing is actually crazy. A thread: researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefi…

1. Most economic modelling in this area shows that the potential benefits of leaving the EU with no deal over the longer term do not make up for the higher trade barriers to the EU, given it's importance to the UK"

So why are we doing this again?

2. Trade and Customs.

"This is likely to mean more customs controls, and probably increased costs and delays caused by customs checks of trucks from the EU and could cause a 17 mile queue at the port of Dover"

3. Free Movement

"The position of those who on exit day have not yet been resident in the UK for 5 years- those with pre-settled status - is less clear."

"For UK nationals it is unclear whether they could continue to access social security benefits in the EU27"

4. Internal security.

"Leaving the EU without a deal could result in a loss of operational capacity and strategic influence and an increased demand on resources because of the need to compensate for these losses"

5. Transport and aviation.

"It MIGHT be possible to agree a bare bones aviation agreement in the event of a no deal scenario"

This is just crazy.

6. Research and Higher Education.

"..higher education sector and research bodies are concerned about impact of a no deal on access to EU research funding and collaboration on EU projects, recruitment of staff and access to the ERASMUS programme"

Lets stop equivocating. #brexit with or without a deal will take the country backwards. There was a great tweet earlier by a guy who described brexit as a process of "tearing down systems that work, just to make us all a little bit poorer".
