Dear #LGBTQ community, we need your help. There are three men who are local church leaders in our community who are petitioning the library board to have all books with homosexuals removed from a banned book display the library has up for Banned Books Week.
At first they were just mad about the covers of a few books, but now it has escalated. Now they have written a letter asking for the removal of the display, and verbally expressed that they would like to pursue the destruction of all books regarding homosexuality in the library.
There is going to be a library board meeting on Monday at 2:30 at the Rumford Public Library (Maine) and they plan on being there. Here's what I need from you. If you can, please email the library at tbutler@rumford.lib.me.us and let them know why they should not...
allow these men to censor the books our town has access to. Please, spread the word about this. We're a really small town and could use all the help we can get to stop them.
As an aside, if anyone doesn't know, Banned books week is an annual event launched in 1982 to celebrate our freedom to read.
UPDATE: We now have access to the letter they sent! And it's signed by them with their churches, addresses, and phone numbers! Perhaps calling them and expressing our concerns about what they are trying might help?
I just realized I should have mentioned this. One of the librarians was one of the people bringing this to the attention of the community. And I have been told that the director (the one you're emailing) said that if this is allowed to happen, they will quit.
There are a few people on the libraries board that might allow it to happen though. Which is why the emails are important.
