4 Israeli F-16 jets attacked targets in Syria on Monday evening, approaching from Mediterranean at a low altitude. The Il-20 was on patrol in the same area.The warning came just a minute before the attack started,which did not leave time to move the Il-20 plane to a safe area.
Israelis have known that the Russian plane was present in the area, but this did not stop them from executing the provocation. As a consequence, the Il-20 was shot down by Syrian AD S-200 in response to the Israeli missiles attack.
Moscow has laid the blame for the crew’s deaths “squarely on the Israeli side.”
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu spoke to his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman on the phone about the downing of the Russian Il-20 plane on Monday night.
