THREAD! 1-A number of experts are saying the recent @nytimes @ScottShaneNYT @MarkMazzettiNYT BIG #Trump-#Russia piece is one of the best pieces of journalism in recent years, and IT SURE IS. I had three levels of reaction to this as someone who has closely analyzed this topic.
-1st, I was OVERJOYED that 1 of the best newspapers FINALLY gave 2 of their best journalists go-ahead & space to cover the #Trump-#Russia the only way it can be properly understood: a deep-dive detailed look at big, overall picture over time. Our society is better off for it!
-2nd, I was SUPER frustrated generally cuz, 2+ years after topic should've obvi been covered this way only @NYTimes among biggest outlets has done this. W/ smaller respected outlets. Even 1 year into it only @aminterest/@submergingmkt, @newrepublic/@craigunger had. Circa 0 since
-I've noted before how particularly damning this is since much of this information now being presented/discussed was around in 2016 and long before. I've spoken with a number of reporters who tried but just didn't get editorial support to cover this properly. Gatekeepers FAILED
-How do I know this info was avail then? Cuz I began writing on it July 2016. Which leads to my 3rd feeling: deep personal frustration cuz a lot of same info I noted 2 yrs ago now coming out w/ analysis often similar to/same as mine is being hailed as finest journalism in yrs!
-What's heartbreaking isn't that I've been ripped off (I haven't); I praise work of these others, some of whom have been kind enough to discuss w/ me. It's that I was FAR ahead-as much as 2 years!-in finding relevant info & that Mueller & NYT story vindicates/echoes my analysis
-Since July 2016, I've struggled to survive & pay my bills while I've had to watch this story get largely ignored at 1st, then later see my own work passed over for very similar work/analysis 1, 2 years later coming from top people at top outlets & getting lots of praise/buzz.
-To demonstrate this, I'll show excerpts from this exceptional @NYTimes recent piece side-by-side w/ my own work below. I'll go from the beginning to the end of the article & note how much earlier my work showed same/similar info/analysis. (If only I'd been listened to in 2016!)
-@NYTimes Sept 20, 2018 on left. My work from December 7, 2016 in middle & on right. Grateful @WarIsBoring/@daxe republished, from which @rferl/@powervertical quoted/mentioned 2x that month. Note #PearlHarbor analogies in both pieces. Link to my piece: linkedin.com/pulse/first-ru…
-@NYTimes Sept, 2018 on left. My piece from the end of July, 2016, on right. Besides #Manafort, I also discussed #Gates, #Page, #Flynn in the piece, among others. Link to my piece: linkedin.com/pulse/trump-pu…
-@NYTimes Sept, 2018 on left. On right, my work from Feb 17, 2017; link to my article here, also graciously republished by @daxe/@WarIsBoring: linkedin.com/pulse/welcome-…
-@NYTimes Sept, 2018, section header on left. Same conclusion in there about same events as in my late July, 2016, piece, excerpted on right: Link to my piece: linkedin.com/pulse/trump-pu…
-@NYTimes Sept, 2018, on left. My work from Dec, 2016, in the middle and on the right. Link to my article here: linkedin.com/pulse/first-ru…
-@NYTimes Sept, 2018, on left. My work from July, 2016, in center (link here: linkedin.com/pulse/trump-pu…) and from Dec, 2016, on right (link here: linkedin.com/pulse/first-ru…)
-@NYTimes Sept, 2018, section header on left. In my own work in 2016: middle from July (link: linkedin.com/pulse/trump-pu…), right from pre-election November (link: linkedin.com/pulse/exclusiv…)
-@NYTimes Sept, 2018, on left. From my work from July, 2016, on right (link: linkedin.com/pulse/trump-pu…)
-@NYTimes Sept, 2018, on right. My own work from Dec, 2016, on the left (link here: linkedin.com/pulse/first-ru…).
-And here is the link the one @NYTimes article I've been referencing, in case you needed it: nytimes.com/interactive/20… The above examples focused on my earliest work, but are not comprehensive, and don't even get into my later work throughout 2017 and 2018.
-I also have another thread that goes more into my process over time of my research and my work with links to other pieces I have written that are incredibly relevant to this thread, too:
-Bottom line: If I'm just a lowly freelancer, but can put out comparable research/analysis and come to many of the same conclusions as top reporters at a top paper in a piece regarded as landmark journalism, but my work is about 2 years ahead, maybe a real outlet should hire me
