All the Republican rage during the #KavanaghHearing is telling: Brett's rage, Lindsey's rage, the indignation, the belief that this is somehow the worst thing to ever happen to the American political process. The lack of self-awareness is damning
There's no rescuing these men from their perceptions. They have never been told no. They don't understand it. The word violates their sense of meaning, and so it incenses them
To those inured to failure, there is no learning from a defeat, even when it is deserved. The only cure is to send them out into the wilderness. Maybe they will find themselves. Maybe their children will be better. But for the love of god, they should never hold power
These men are having tantrums in the chamber where our country convenes its leaders and its power. They see nothing wrong with this. And they would ridicule someone else, someone different, having that same breakdown. This day is an utter violation to them
But it is a violation to others, too. It is a violation of decency to see their full entitlement on display. To have all the masks stripped away, to see the raw, emotional, pulsing core of their rage, their privilege, their tilted sense of "decency"
I can only try to be good, not through rhetoric about moderation, but through action. I will fail sometimes. I must admit that failure. When I fail, I hope someone finds this tweet and shoves it in my face
We who share the faces of these republican men must remember humility, self-awareness, and kindness. This hearing is a viscerally painful thing. It may be distressing to men, but it is harmful to women. Dr. Blasey Ford's testimony was raw, courageous truth
Please listen to women. Please believe women. Please acknowledge all the faces and bodies and souls our culture is so clearly ready to disregard, to treat as second class, to destroy, all so men named Brett can have their seat on a court
His sickness is terminal, and we can't cure him. We can only innoculate ourselves, our friends, our families with kindness. Please be kind. Maybe we will live to see that world with no more angry, spitting, unrepentant Bretts
