🤓 thread: no journalist has asked #ScoMo about the discrepancy between his claim australia will "meet paris at a canter" & the environment department's clear analysis that, with current policy settings, we'll miss it by a country mile.

the environment department's report is crystal clear: as of last december we were set to miss our target by between 868-934 MtCO₂e.

(for comparison, our annual emissions are now 560 MtCO₂e.)

…and just yesterday (grand final eve, public holiday in vic, etc.) the department released new numbers showing that we're getting worse.

in @GrogsGamut's excellent chart below, our "paris" target (~435Mt) is as far below the x-axis as our current emissions are above it!

australia's emissions* for the 12 months to march 2018 were 560MtCO₂e. this is a 1.4% increase on the previous year!

(excluding land use "LULCF", because the stats are generally considered BS)

this is the 15th quarter in a row that annualised emissions have increased — the 4th year in a row we've got further from our target.

the short-lived carbon price reduced annual emissions by 16.3Mtpa.
since @TonyAbbottMHR repealed it, emissions have increased 32.7Mtpa.

if it weren't for renewables, emissions would be about 25MtCO₂e pa higher.

we met the renewables target two years early, yet @AngusTaylorMP recently said he opposes the expansion of the RET…

…even though he knows renewables are bringing down prices. theguardian.com/australia-news…

it's clear that #ScoMo is pulling our leg / telling porkies / fibbing / outright lying when he says "we'll meet paris in a canter" — the government's own numbers makes this clear as day. #auspol
