Let’s dig a bit deeper though. First off. If 1 of your drugs is made there, shortages in the short time R not happening.
It’s long term availability/ cost may become an issue, MAY. Some history. PR started 2 recruit pharma in the 70’s w/ tax breaks.
Tax breaks so good, U would have 2B a #Dotard to not take them. This made the “to ground” cost of production crazy low.
This drew in big pharma & PR became the main hub 4 pharmaceuticals in that region of the world.
The tax breaks came w/ a catch though. U had 2 produce something that was not produced on the main land. This makes PR vital 4 many drugs.
In 2006 all the tax breaks were not renewed. This caused many companies to either not invest in new plants...
...not invest in expanding current plants or when a product died, not bringing in a new 1 & letting the plant close.
This reduction in production has been attributed as a partial cause to PR’s economic decline.
This level of destruction will likely force many companies to exit completely as rebuilding will not B economically worth it.
Those that stay R going 2 need massive help restarting the plants, if they can get the workers back & infrastructure 2 support production.
Restarting a plant is not as simple as flipping a switch. Everything needs to be inspected for damage.
Testing equipment rectified or repaired as needed. Raw materials retested to certify purity, production lines repaired & outputs validated.
Those R just a few list items. Due to mergers, testing equipment repair companies R limited. Re-testing product takes time...
as does validating lab equipment. Depending on plant damage some may take months 2B fully functional again. While others may close for good.
If a company moves production, that in itself is a large undertaking & can take a month or more before production can even begin.
Once production does begin that’s when validation starts, which also takes time, once again.
Like we said short term the companies plan 4 these types of weather events. Long term this is going 2 shake up production/ locations.
This is why the FDA is being so proactive in its support of PR. The faster they can react & help companies restart...
