/ Yes, #EverydayRacism is feeding into a narrative that distorts the truth about #violence, its perpetrators and victims…
/ On the victim side, since that’s my dissertation work, if the victim is #Black and young, they’re portrayed as having asked for it….
/ If the victim is #White or older or very young, well then let’s look at Black young men close to them…
/ I mean, remember when Pat McDonough, from Baltimore County, was blaming every crime on “roving gangs of youths”?..
/ And then the public got so worried and police reacted to every group of Black kids out having honest fun. White kids, not so much…
/ So put yourself in the shoes of a Black kid in a delapidated home. You hear that you’re supposed to be a criminal. You’re programmed…
/ Young Black men are not portrayed in general as aspiring artists, astronauts in training, or brilliant medical students…
/ So you fit the role you’re given by society. It almost happened to me in Texas. Society pegged me as teenage dad with record of drugs…
/ Society shapes a young person almost as much as their family. No hope = hopeless. Paint us as criminals and we become criminals…
/ What’s there to lose? And, now more than ever in my lifetime, #WhiteNationalism is pushing the narrative hard against people of color…
/ Trayvon Martin was not the victim, remember? He was the aggressor. Poor George, who accosted him and shot him dead, was the victim…
/ And Michael Brown in Missouri? A friend of mine, a cop in El Paso, Texas, shared every meme of him being a “thug” that she could find…
/ And society was okay with those narratives. They fit the picture of the world better than cops shooting innocents in US of A…
/ So that incident the other night? It fit the narrative of violence in #Baltimore, so we, even I, kind of glossed over it…
/ And we allowed the narrative to continue to paint the world around us.

Good chatting with you.
