Did you know women are not guaranteed equal justice under the law of our Constitution? True story. That’s why in 1923 the Equal Rights Amendment was introduced in congress.

#7in10forRoe #ERAnow

(Thread)
"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”

#ERAnow
The Equal Rights Amendment proposes an amendment to the US Constitution guaranteeing equal rights for all citizens regardless of sex. Equal means equal.

#ERAnow
Lack of recognition of women’s equality in the Constitution perpetuates the belief that women are ‘less than’ which leads to unequal treatment, abuses of power, sexual harassment, misconduct and assault.

#ERAnow
The Equal Rights Amendment is also an economic issue. And it is proven that when women earn more it helps stimulates the economy. Gender equality would boost the economy by over 4.3 trillion over a decade

#ERAnow
The ERA would provide legal protection against rolling back the advances in women's rights that have been achieved since the mid–20th century.

And by the way, right now discriminatory laws are being enacted in many states.

#ERAnow #7in10forRoe
The Equal Rights Amendment was passed by Congress in 1972 and sent to the states for ratification. Ratification is just a fancy word for making something officially valid.

It was ratified by 35 of the necessary 38 states.

#ERAnow
The obligatory #ERA deadline was extended from 1979 to 1982.

Opposition stopped more state ratifications.

Every year since 1982 the Equal Rights Amendment has been introduced in the House and Senate but it has never again been voted on by Congress. #ERAnow
But wait! Nevada ratified the ERA 35 years past the obligatory deadline. Which means, if we can get the obligatory deadline extended again, we only need two more states to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. #ERAnow
Here are the states that did NOT ratify the Equal Rights Amendment: AL, AZ, AR, FL, GA, IL, LA, MS, MO, NC, OK, SC, UT, VA.

If you live in one of these states, please contact your lawmakers and demand #ERAnow.

My thoughts on this sad day for America (a thread):

Right-wing & corporate special interests selected this nominee and propped up his nomination with tens of millions of dollars in dark money.

We need to prioritize protecting our courts, which starts with retaking the Senate.
They picked Kavanaugh because they know he is a reliable vote; he is a lifelong foot soldier for these interests, a political operative who became one of the most partisan ideological judges in the country.
That they supported Kavanaugh despite his obvious and disqualifying flaws - temperament, dishonesty, rabid partisanship, credible accusations of sexual assault - speaks to how beholden they are to these special interest powers, and how critical the Court is in their plan.

Even as hundreds of separated children remain terrified & alone in detention, the Trump Administration is moving to try & replace family separation with indefinite family incarceration in an unacceptable bid to jail children indefinitely and subject them to more trauma and abuse.
To move this plan forward, the Trump Administration is trying to strip away existing safeguards and protections for children through a new regulation to allow for the long-term imprisonment of children in facilities with well-documented abusive conditions.
The number one priority of the Flores Settlement Agreement is that children not be incarcerated. This foundational principle, which the government agreed to in the settlement, recognizes that the best way to ensure a child’s wellbeing is to keep them out of jail.

America! Take note! What happened today was an act of patriotism by Senator Booker for the people. But maybe it’s what happened next was most outstanding—the entire @SenateDems in the judiciary committee stood with Booker and therefore stood with the American people. 1/5
The @GOP wants you to believe that they are the party for the people. The way they want you to believe this is by just repeating the words over and over. Words are just words. What actionable items have the Republicans done for the American people? 2/5
Weren’t we taught actions speak louder than words? Think about which party fights for your right to healthcare and equality — which party fights for your right to live out the American Dream by giving those willing to work hard for it, every possibility to achieve it. 3/5

So, @BetsyDeVos is considering allowing states to use federal funding to purchase guns for educators.

Here’s what that money would be taken away from:
