1/ THREAD: I often get attacked by extremists who see any attempt to improve safety and gun laws as a gun ban. As a gun owner, I believe we should lead efforts to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them
3/ Require all transfers via FFL's. Without a background check, non-licensed sellers can't know if a buyer is prohibited from buying a gun. Only 9 states and DC require background checks on private sales of all guns.
4/ Expand & improve background checks:
Although millions have failed BGC's & denied a gun via a licensed dealer, exemptions for private sales make BGC's all too easy to circumvent. Republicans voted against universal checks
5/ Data sharing is inadequate, allowing Charleston, Virginia Tech, & Lafayette shooters to buy guns. Data is voluntary & mental health is often missing. If FBI doesn't complete check in 3 days, sale is made (300K in 2016!)
6/ Require manual safeties. Guns are the 3rd leading cause of death for children in the US. Yet manufacturers aren't required to add manual safeties that could prevent a child from pulling trigger & accidentally firing it.
7/ Ban high capacity magazines & bump stocks which are designed to inflict mass casualties. The Texas church shooter used a Ruger AR-556. Here it is in action with a $99.00 bump stock.
8/ Think of the many products, from cars to cribs, that used tragedies to improve safety through better design. Gun manufacturers were exempted from the 1972 Consumer Product Safety Act and lawsuits are usually futile.
9/ Pass Child Access Prevention (CAP) laws and prosecute parents whose toddlers access their guns and shoot themselves or others. Parents are rarely prosecuted and 22 states have no CAP laws at all.
10/ Support the ban on "straw purchases" (buying a gun for someone else and circumventing the background check system). The NRA fought to overturn this ban and barely lost in the Supreme Court 5-4. Your vote matters!
11/ Get to know gun laws. We need common sense solutions. Avoid extremism and be honest in your debate. We are making it way too easy for both domestic terrorists and ISIS. Your vote matters!
12/ Understand the depth of the problem: More Americans have been killed by gun since 1968 than in ALL U.S. wars combined!
Deaths in all US Wars: 1,264,000
Gun Deaths 1968-2015: 1,516,863
13/ Not only do NRA-beholden Republicans fight against Universal Background Checks, Trump's budget CUTS MILLIONS of dollars from the already flawed gun Background Check System!
2/ ICYMI: Former Trump Kentucky campaign chair, Tim Nolan, donned full Ku Klux Klan regalia while trying to recruit people to join the Klan. He was sentenced to 20 years for human trafficking. Nolan extorted sex from women, some of them underage, with heroin and threats of arrest
3/ Trumpist Texas Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold used taxpayer money to pay a settlement to a former aide who accused him of sexual harassment and other improper conduct.
The “family values” Republican held a fundraiser at a strip club in ducky pajamas. #StopKavanaugh#MeToo

1/ Understanding gun laws: The #DefaultProceed or "Charleston Loophole"
The #NRA killed Brady Bill's provision buyers complete full background check before getting the gun. With NRAs "instant" background check system, if FBI can't complete review within 3 days, you get the gun!
2/ Understanding gun laws: "Gun show loophole"
Only licensed sellers have to run a background check. Per federal law, private sellers do not. Only 9 states and DC require background checks on private sales of all types of guns. #GunReformNow#MarchForOurLives
3/ Understanding gun laws: CAP Laws (Child Access Protection)
In 2015 & 2016, more toddlers killed Americans than terrorists. Kids accessed parents' guns & pulled the trigger, killing themselves or family. 21 states have no CAP laws to prosecute negligent parents.
