#Tweetteaching
Lawyers who are new to Twitter, here are some best practices on composing tweets... /1
Stick with 2 or less hashtags per tweet. Hashtags are like search terms... people will see your tweet if they do a search of the hashtag.

For example, we have tweets that have used #helpthelawyers or #travelban. /2
If you want someone to see your tweet, tag them by including their @ name in your tweet. This makes your tweet appear in their notifications. /3
If you use Hootsuite or Sprout Social or Buffer and it allows you to create a message that simultaneously sends out a tweet and a Facebook post, check both platforms to see how they look.

Often times Facebook posts look ok but tweets do not (eg they may get cut off). /4
Chances are your tweet will only be seen for about 11 minutes in the day. Other tweets will bury your tweet on your followers' timelines.

(Think about how long you scroll down on your own timeline before you give up on it.)

Repeating yourself is a good thing to do here! /5
Also, people jump on Twitter at different times. When are YOU on Twitter the most? (lunch, 9pm-ish are busy times)

You can use tools to schedule when a tweet will be sent, but we prefer sending tweets when you can reply to others. /6
Twitter loves engagements (not talking family law here).

Tweets that are liked, replied too, etc. So try to write tweets that ask questions of others, or are about important topics. And reply to other people who send out tweets.

This is the modern day water cooler. /7
Now lawyers, do not think you have to limit your tweets to topics that are only about your substantive area of law.

Lawyers with larger followings have tweeted about everything. Personal, their opinions, sports, and yes, politics.

Be genuine. That is what people notice./8
Twitter is a weird platform that is initially hard to use and has its own language. But it is now something that is more than fluff. Tweets are being used as evidence in lawsuits, for attorney referrals, to view PACER documents for free, and to learn from other attorneys here. /9
Like any tool, the more you use Twitter the easier it becomes.

Reach out to others (tag them by including their @ name or reply to their tweets) and ask them questions.

Ask us. After all, we formed in order to #helpthelawyers.

To the lawyers and others who volunteered to help with the refugee, immigrants, family separation problem: Many of you are now experiencing frustration because you volunteered with a big org. and after that, you have heard nothing from them.
Why?
A: They are slammed./1
These big orgs have reported that thousands of lawyers and interpreters and paralegals and law students... THOUSANDS have signed up to volunteer!

A good thing but also a tsunami hitting their onboarding process. /2
So what can you do in the meantime?
1. Stay on top of the news about the immigration and refugee crisis. It seems to change daily.
2. Connect with individuals, lawyers & smaller orgs here on Twitter. They don't have the intake problem and are still actively tweeting/engaging./3
