1/ One of the worst parts of the proposed new DHS "public charge" rule would resurrect a 400-yr-old idea, punish lower-income immigrants, AND deliver a massive new giveaway to Wall Street.

Not seeing much out there on this piece right now, so here's what you need to know:

2/ The idea of a "public charge bond" goes back to the earliest colonial days. If someone coming over from Europe didn't seem like they would be able to support themselves, the ship's captain would have to put up a given amount of money to keep them off the dole or take them back

3/ As part of the "Passenger Cases," SCOTUS struck down the city of Boston's attempt to collect public charge bonds from ship captains as unconstitutional in 1849, finding that only the federal government had this kind of power. But it didn't actually exercise it until 1882.

[1]As an Iranian-American, I see #TravelBan on Iranian citizens inhumane, however sometimes you have to make hard decisions and this time is one of them. Islamic regime doesn't cooperate with US govt, terrorist govt of Iran doesn't provide any info of anyone to U.S. govt unlike..

[2]...any other country. Second point: Visa is NOT a right. Visa is a gift. U.S. govt technically could ban anyone or any country to make sure American citizens and United States are safe. Iran is NO exception. I mean just look at Iran after 1979 radical-Islamist.....

I interviewed 14 Yemeni-American families - more than 50 people including children - and spoke to immigration lawyers, advocates, and community leaders who know hundreds more. The same feelings of shock, betrayal, and despair were echoed in every story.

Sixteen-year-old Hazem Al-Shawbi, who journeyed alone 15 days through four countries for a visa interview and the chance to join his father in North Carolina, wondered why Trump wouldn’t allow a young kid looking for a brighter future into the United States.

The other day, I was listening to a @INTLSpyCast interview with @MicheleRigAssad-- an ex-CIA operator who talked about sexism within @CIA that how CIA would pick clueless white men for the Middle East missions over her who speaks Arabic fluently & studied the region for years.
