For news, Wired recommends @nuzzel. Great app, but it never stuck for me because I don't use social media for news. (@AppleNews is OK, but still limited to a handful of countries.) My tip: Pick a trusted news source (mine is @tagesschau), use their site, pay them if you can.

Events are tricky - for all the hate I have for Facebook, they absolutely nail events and the social features around them. However, @doodletweet is *amazing* for finding a common time slot, and their comment feature is robust enough for some online socialising around events!
Birthdays, well… While casual quick FB congrats are kind of nice, I wonder how much they really mean. For people I really care about, I note the birthday in my address book, which in turn makes the date show up in my calendar so I don't forget.
I haven't used Marketplace that much, but I always thought one is better served by using a truly local platform like @Freecycle or online second-hand platforms. Ask around in your local community!
Groups are another tricky feature to replace. It really depends on what works best for your, well, group: An email list? Can be self-hosted or something like @GroupSpaces. @SlackHQ is perfect for permanent groups! Fingers crossed for @signalapp group messaging soon…
Lastly, if you use Facebook for logging into other services, I don't blame you (it's very convenient), but please stop. Get yourself a decent password manager like @1Password and set up proper accounts with safe, unique passwords. Okthxbye.
