/ This ongoing thread and subthreads - mostly between @leashless, @pospigos, and @artbrock - is incredible. Deepest, no holds barred discussion I've seen about @holochain and it's potential fundamental design mistakes wrt how/how much it enables privacy/transparency...
/ I'll give some central points here, but read the thread and all the sub threads, they're excellent...
/ @leashless’s basic critique of @holochain: "'Social capitalism is just more capitalism...' We are just taking our relationships and making them legible to the market, for monitoring, tokenization, and extraction. We will not like it. We will not like it AT ALL.”
/ how @leashless wants blockchain to work: “Accountability and transparency, with the weak policing the strong.”
/ more... @leashless: “1) Humans need law. Without it, you'll get mobs persecuting out groups on poor evidence. 2) Giving people freedom to persecute is easy: just take away the rules and the transparency. 3) Mafias LOVE privacy. Slave auctions! 4) Reputation enslaves: Uber”
/ @leashless's current work: “All I'm doing right now is making the money to build appropedia.org/hexayurt zones for the oncoming tides of climate refugees. This is a desparate triage strategy. Nothing else has worked, and I've been pretty thorough.”
/ @artbrock's basic response wrt @holochain: “I actually agree with most of your critiques. They're clearly about something, but it isn't Holochain. Holochain is optimized for connected, resilient, STRUCTURED community.”
/ @pospigos's summary of the conversation: “1) the law is contextual, we need human judges. Nobody should build governance or economic systems which do away with the human element entirely...
/ @pospigos's summary cont'd. 2) reputation metrics are a terrible idea. Nobody should build systems which reduce people's relationships to numbers, ESPECIALLY in irreversible databases.
/ @pospigos's summary contd. 3) people need to be free, but they need to be accountable too. This is a sliding scale and we need to find the sweet spot. 4) many of our planet's resources are scarce. We need systems to better manage & more equitably distribute them.
/ @pospigos's summary contd. 5) paradoxically, our planet is abundant. If we treat it right, it can support us all easily. Big "if". If we mess up, scarce resource management may one day apply to everything.
/ @pospigos's summary concluded. 6) @leashless and @artbrock have ideological differences, but there is nothing technically wrong with #holochain's architecture. Outcomes will depend on how it's wielded, as they did with #blockchain.”
END/ Like I said, follow the actual thread, @leashless provides lots of interesting supporting documents. The conversation gets to the heart of whether/how reputation systems enable collectives to function better.
